Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association and Guild of Undergraduates Matilda Award for Cultural Excellence [F7015]A Matilda Award for Cultural Excellence, consisting of $1000 and a certificate, is presented annually by Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association, in conjunction with the Guild of Undergraduates, to individuals or groups in recognition of excellence and outstanding achievement in cultural pursuits. The award is administered in accordance with the following regulations. 1. The purpose of the award is to acknowledge excellence and/or outstanding achievement by students at The University of Western Australia in cultural pursuits such as music, literature, public speaking, dance, visual arts or drama, judged on the basis of their contribution to the field of participation, and the value of that contribution to the community as a whole, and to the University. 2.(1) Nominations for the award are called for by the Council of Convocation on the first Monday in August of each year. (2) Forms are available from the Guild Student Centre, the Arts Union office, or the Office of Convocation. (3) Nominations are sought throughout the University community and may come from fellow students, members of the University's academic staff who are familiar with the nominee's work in the field in question, or from the nominee. 3.(1) One Matilda Award is presented annually and may be in any of the following categories: (a) music, including classical, rock, popular, jazz and any other form of music; (b) literature, including fiction, non-fiction, short stories, prose, poetry and any other form of literature; (c) public speaking, including debating, specialised expertise in a foreign language and any other form of public speaking; (d) dance, including ballet, contemporary and ballroom, and all facets such as choreography, production and performance; (e) visual arts, including painting, graphic design, textiles and sculpture, and any other form of visual art; (f) drama, including theatre, television, street theatre, production and any other form of drama; or (g) any other cultural pursuit. (2) Nominees may be individuals or groups. (3) Nominations may be made on the basis of work in any of the categories specified, undertaken as part of a University course or on the basis of participation in arts in the wider community. 4. Selection is made by a committee comprising: (a) the Warden of Convocation or nominee; (b) the Guild President or nominee; (c) the President of the Guild Public Affairs Council or nominee; (d) the Convener of the Awards Committee of the Council of Convocation or nominee; (e) a nominee of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. 5.(1) In determining excellence and outstanding achievement, the committee will consider the significance of the nominee's contribution either in terms of personal achievement or of contribution to group achievement. (2) Achievement at any or all of international, national, local, community and University levels will be considered. 6. Certificates of commendation may be awarded by Convocation to nominees who have demonstrated merit. 7. The Council may elect not to make an award in any year, or to make more than one award in any year. |

Distinguished International Alumnus Award [F8143]The Distinguished International Alumnus Award was established by the University Senate to recognise outstanding contributions made by the University's international graduates in countries other than Australia, which have served to enhance the University's reputation internationally. The award is made in accordance with the following regulations. 1. The award is made to a graduate who, having completed a degree of the University as an international student, has subsequently made an outstanding contribution to a country or countries other than Australia. 2. The award comprises a suitably inscribed wall plaque. 3.(1) Nominations for the award may be made by any person associated in any way with the University and must be supported in writing by a second person who is a graduate of the University. (2) Nominations must comprise a brief statement of the case in favour of an award and a citation setting out the details of the nominee's achievements. (3) Nominations must be lodged in confidence with the Registrar and must not be communicated to the nominee. 4. The Honorary Degrees Committee will make decisions on the granting of awards, having regard to the advice of the Warden of Convocation and the Director of the International Centre. |

Dr F. Simpson Tertiary Entrance Examination Prize [F7999]1. The Dr F. Simpson Tertiary Entrance Examination Prize consists of books to the value of the annual income after capitalisation, in accordance with Senate policy, on the sum of money donated by Dr Frederick Simpson. 2. The prize is awarded annually to the candidate who, among the students who have obtained a final scaled mark of at least 75 per cent in English or English Literature, has achieved the highest Tertiary Entrance Score. |

UWA Excellence Awards [F1931]The University of Western Australia celebrates excellence and seeks to recognise outstanding students in schools throughout the State. To this end, the UWA Excellence Awards are established and are awarded in accordance with the following regulations. 1.(1) The University will offer to one student from each senior secondary school in the State who is eligible in terms of Regulation 3 a guaranteed place in their first preference course except if that preference is for Medicine, Dentistry or Music to which particular selection processes apply. (2) Applicants who— (a) are eligible in terms of Regulation 3; and (b) have nominated Medicine, Dentistry or Music as a first preference; and (c) are offered and accept a place in their first preference course, will receive the benefits of the award set out in Regulation 2. (3) Applicants who— (a) are eligible in terms of Regulation 3; and (b) have nominated Medicine, Dentistry or Music as a first preference; and (c) are not offered a place in their first preference course, will be guaranteed a place in the next UWA course they have listed as a preference that is not Medicine, Dentistry or Music. 2. All students who are eligible in terms of Regulation 3 who accept the offer of a place in a UWA course will receive a $500 book voucher and a certificate of merit. 3.(1) To be eligible for an award, a student must— (a) have been nominated by their school as the school's Year 12 student most likely to succeed at university; and (b) have applied through TISC for a place at UWA, nominating the desired UWA course as their first preference; and (c) meet the admission requirements for entry to UWA including Secondary Graduation, competence in English and course prerequisites, where applicable, but not necessarily have attained the advertised cut-off score for their chosen course; and (d) achieve a Tertiary Entrance Rank of at least 80.00; and (e) be a permanent resident or citizen of Australia. (2) To be guaranteed a place in a UWA course, an applicant who is eligible in terms of sub-regulation (1) who has nominated Medicine, Dentistry or Music as a first preference must have nominated a UWA course other than Medicine, Dentistry or Music as a second, third or fourth preference. 4. Applications must be made on the application form sent to each school by the Prospective Students Office and be returned to that office by the advertised closing date. 5. The University will notify applicants of the outcome of their application in early January. |

UWA Graduates Association Sports Bursary [F174]Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association, in co-operation with the Guild of Undergraduates, having established a capital fund to provide an award to be known as the UWA Graduates Association Sports Bursary, the bursary is established and is administered in accordance with the following regulations. 1. The purpose of the bursary is to provide financial assistance to students who have demonstrated both sporting excellence or potential sporting excellence, and a sustained level of proficient academic performance, to enable them to further their sporting careers or achievements. 2. Bursaries may be used to acquire equipment, to defray travel expenses incurred in attending a sporting event, or to meet other appropriate costs associated with the recipient's sporting career. 3. Applications from full-time or part-time undergraduate students who have completed units to the value of at least 48 points will be invited by the Council of Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association and must be submitted to the Office of the UWA Graduates Association no later than the date and time promulgated by the Council. 4. Applications must be submitted on the approved form, which can be obtained from departmental offices, the UWA Sport and Recreation Association, the Guild of Undergraduates enquiry office, and the office of Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association, and must include: (a) an academic record; (b) a letter of support from a member of academic staff; (c) evidence of sporting excellence, which may include citations, trophies, or recommendations from recognised coaches, team managers or committees of sporting clubs; (d) a curriculum vitae providing information on personal details and academic qualifications; (e) a statement of the proposed use of the bursary; and (f) any other information which the Council may request. 5. Bursaries are awarded by the Council of Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising: (a) the Warden of Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association or nominee; (b) two members of the Council of Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association nominated by the Warden;Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â (c) two past winners of a Blue or Half Blue nominated by the Council of Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association; (d) the President of the Guild Sports Council or nominee; (e) the Executive Director, UWA Sport and Recreation Association or nominee; and (f) a member of academic staff nominated by the Head of the School of Human Movement and Exercise Science. 6. The amount of a bursary is determined by the Council of Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association. 7. Confirmation of the award of a bursary by the Council is final. 8. The Council may in any year elect not to award a bursary or to award more than one bursary. 9. The recipient of a bursary is required to provide a short written report on how the bursary was used and on his or her recent sporting activities and achievements for publication at the discretion of the Council of Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association. 10. The bursary must be taken up within 12 months of the date of offer. |
