The University of Western Australia French Embassy Scholarship * [F14304]

The University of Western Australia (the University) and the French Embassy have agreed to provide financial support for an annual scholarship, called the University of Western Australia French Embassy Scholarship, to assist students enrolled at the University to undertake one or two semesters of study under student exchange arrangements at a French university or grande école.   

Purpose
1.
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students enrolled at the University to undertake one or two semesters of study under student exchange arrangements at a French university or grande école.

Value
2.(1)
The University and the French Embassy each provide an amount of $2000 annually for each of three years commencing in 2006, as outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the University and the French Embassy, to provide one scholarship each year to the value of $4,000.

(2) In addition, the French Embassy provides full access to health cover in France for each scholarship recipient. 

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must—

(a) be a student in an honours, graduate diploma or master's course;

(b) be an Australian citizen;

(c) have attained a proficiency in the French language as determined within the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding;

(d) meet the minimum academic criteria for participating in the Student Exchange Programme (minimum overall Weighted Average Mark of 65 per cent and at least one year of study at the University); and

(e) not hold another award which includes a travel allowance except in exceptional circumstances as determined by the selection committee.

Body Responsible for Selection

The selection committee for the scholarship is the Selection Committee for Study Abroad Scholarships which comprises:

(a) the Director, International Centre, or nominee, as chair;

(b) two representatives from the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences including one representative covering the language disciplines;

(c) two representatives from other faculties;

(d) the Manager, Study Abroad and Student Exchange, as secretary.

Selection Process
5.(1)
Selection of the recipient is made by the selection committee having regard to the completed formal application form, applicant's academic record, proof of language proficiency, personal statement of purpose outlining academic motivation and proposed challenges and benefits, faculty approval form, referees' reports.

(2) The selection committee may interview short-listed applicants.  

Method of Payment
6.(1)
The scholarship is paid in one instalment prior to the commencement of the exchange period.

(2) If a scholarship recipient returns to Australia before completing the planned period of study, the French Embassy component ($2,000) of the scholarship must be repaid.

(3) The selection committee determines, after receiving a report from the student, whether any of the remaining funds are to be repaid.

Administration
7.
The Director International Centre ensures that the scholarships are advertised in the University of Western Australia with details of closing dates and application procedures.

Application Procedure
8.
Application must be made on the application form available from the Study Abroad Office and include:

(a) the applicant's academic record;

(b) proof of language proficiency;

(c) personal statement of purpose outlining academic motivation and proposed challenges and benefits;

(d) faculty approval form;

(e) referees' reports.
