The UWA Graduate Research Student Travel Award is available to
research students to undertake travel in an area of research
directly relevant to the student’s research.
Title
1. The travel award is called the UWA Graduate Research
Student Travel Award.
Purpose
2. The purpose of the travel award is to assist research
students to undertake travel for a purpose that is directly
relevant to the student’s research work, including
fieldwork, conference attendance and gathering research data.
Value
3. (1) Except as set out in clause
4(5), the total maximum funding available under the award for
each student is $1750.
(2) A student may apply to have
the travel award allocated in up to three instalments.
(3) For travel within Australia,
instalments are a minimum of $500 and a maximum of $750 inclusive
of fares and subsistence, per application.1
(4) For external students, for
travel within the country in which they are recorded as studying,
instalments are a minimum of $500 and a maximum of
$750.1
(5) For overseas travel, awards
provide up to a maximum of $1750, inclusive of fares and
subsistence.
1 For 2008 only, clauses 3(3) and 3(4)
can be waived administratively if necessary to allow a candidate
who has already used their entire previous entitlement of $1500
to claim up to an additional $250, to a maximum of
$1750.
Eligibility Requirements
4. (1) To be eligible for a travel
award, an applicant must be enrolled in a master’s or
doctoral degree course of this institution of which the research
component is at least 66.6 per cent of the total course
requirements and which is eligible for funding under the Research
Training Scheme.
(2) Approval of an
applicant’s research proposal by the relevant body e.g.
Board of the Graduate Research School or Faculty Board, is
required prior to approval of a travel award.
(3) Unless the Board of the
Graduate Research School approves otherwise in exceptional
circumstances, an applicant is eligible for only one travel award
during enrolment in the course in relation to which the award is
made.
(4) An applicant who has
received a travel award and who subsequently transfers to another
UWA research degree course is not eligible for a second
award.
(5) A student who has received a
travel award and who subsequently completes the course in
relation to which the travel award was made is eligible to
receive another award if they later enrol in another eligible
course at this University.
(6) An applicant who is also a
member of the academic staff of this University or any other
higher education institution, or a person in employment which
provides access to travel subsidies is not normally eligible for
an award.
(7) Travel awards are normally
made to students during their candidature however, in exceptional
circumstances and with the written support of the supervisor and
Head of School/Graduate Research Co-ordinator, an award may be
granted in the period up to three months after submission of the
thesis for examination.
Awarding Body
5. The travel awards are made by the Board of the
Graduate Research School, on the recommendation of the Head of
School/Graduate Research Co-ordinator concerned.2

Granting of a travel award is not a
guarantee of safe or appropriate travel to the nominated
location. It is recommended that students planning to travel to
areas where there is potential for travellers to experience
difficulties consult the relevant Government
advice.
Application Procedure
6. (1) Students must forward the
completed application form available at http://www.postgraduate.uwa.edu.au/home/current/travel
together with any required documentation to the Graduate Research
and Scholarships Office.
(2) Applications are normally
processed approximately three to six months prior to the intended
date of departure but earlier applications may be considered.
(3) Awards are not provided
retrospectively, except as set out in clause 4(7).
Administering Body
7. The travel awards are administered by the Graduate
Research and Scholarships Office.
Student Report
8. (1) A recipient of a travel award
must submit a written report through the Co-ordinating Research
Supervisor within one month of returning from the travel
outlining the perceived benefits of the award to their research
and thesis.
(2) Recipients must provide
receipts for the value of the award.
Insurance
9. Students must consult the University’s Travel
Insurance Policy (http://www.safety.uwa.edu.au/policies/travel)
and take additional insurance where any period of leave is not
related to their degree course.
Publications
10. Any thesis, dissertation or other publication
resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in
receipt of the UWA Graduate Research Student Travel Award must
acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the
University by-line.
