Robert Stephens Bursary [F2864]Beatrice and Roy Little of Lower Kalgan having agreed to provide a sum of $1000 every two years for a period of at least five years to fund a bursary in commemoration of Robert Stephens' life-long contribution to the study and preservation of local history in Albany and the Great Southern region of Western Australia, the Robert Stephens Bursary is established and is administered in accordance with the following regulations. 1. The bursary is intended to foster student interest and scholarship in the local history of communities in the Great Southern region of Western Australia by providing financial assistance towards the production of work in this area of study. 2. The bursary is awarded by the UWA Albany Centre on the recommendation of the Robert Stephens Bursary Committee which comprises: (a) the Director of the UWA Albany Centre or nominee; (b) a senior member of the teaching staff in History nominated by the Head of the School of Humanities; and (c) a member of the Little family. 3.(1) Those eligible to apply for the bursary are students currently enrolled at any campus of UWA in a degree in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences or in one of the research degrees administered by the Graduate Research School which are listed at the beginning of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Regulations. (2) Applicants enrolled in an undergraduate degree must have completed at least their first academic year of study. 4. The work in relation to which a bursary is sought may be in the form of a thesis, dissertation, major essay or audio-visual project or in any other medium deemed appropriate by the Robert Stephens Bursary Committee. 5. The UWA Albany Centre administers the bursary and advertises it. 6. Applications, which must be made on the application form available from the UWA Albany Centre, must be accompanied by a project proposal not exceeding 500 words, a curriculum vitae including an academic transcript, and a reference from a proposed supervisor or lecturer. 7. The bursary of up to $1000 may be awarded once at any time during any academic year, but will generally be awarded every second year. 8.(1) Up to $500 of the bursary is awarded to cover actual expenditure related to the research and production of the work including the cost of up to five copies of the work to be lodged as follows: one copy in the UWA Library, one copy in the UWA Albany Centre, two copies in the City of Albany Library and one copy in the Battye Library. (2) If the cost of copying exceeds the funds available, the bursary committee may reduce the number of copies required or make additional funds available to cover the cost. (3) $500 of the bursary is awarded to the bursary recipient when the work has been examined and passed. 9. Any remaining bursary funds are retained by the UWA Albany Centre and put towards the cost of advertising the bursary for the next year it is to be awarded. 10. The finished work will formally acknowledge the assistance of the Robert Stephens Bursary. |
