Tethyan Copper Scholarship * [F14663]

The Tethyan Copper Scholarship is open to Pakistani graduates, particularly those from universities in Baluchistan, who intend to conduct research at The University of Western Australia into political, social and cultural developments in Pakistan. A recipient of the Tethyan Copper Scholarship is governed by the conditions for Scholarships for International Research Fees (SIRF) except as set out below (see SIRF Conditions at http://www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/conditions).

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Tethyan Copper Scholarship.

Purpose 
2.
The purpose of the scholarship is to enable a Pakistani graduate, preferably from a university in Baluchistan, to undertake research at The University of Western Australia into political, social and cultural development in Pakistan leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Value 
3. (1)
The full-time award carries a stipend of $20,000 per annum paid in fortnightly instalments as a living allowance.

Note: No additional allowances are provided to cover student union or amenities fees, costs associated with overseas field work, living expenses, bridging English language courses or travel expenses associated with the relocation of the awardee.

(2) Full-time stipends are currently exempt from taxation under Section 51-10 of the Income Tax Act 1997.

(3) An additional $5972 over three years is provided by the School of Social and Cultural Studies to support the student which includes a grant of $4000 for field work and travel and a grant of $740 for conference travel, subject to the normal conditions and approval processes applied by the School.

Eligibility Requirements

(1) To be eligible for consideration for a Tethyan Copper Scholarship an applicant must be—

(a) a citizen of Pakistan;

(b) a graduate of a recognised university in Pakistan, with a degree equivalent to at least a first class honours degree from this University;

(c) awarded a Scholarship for International Research Fees (SIRF); and

(d) intending to conduct research at The University of Western Australia into political, social and cultural developments in Pakistan.

(2) To be eligible to take up the scholarship a student must enrol for the Doctor of Philosophy in an area of research supervised by the School of Social and Cultural Studies and based in the Centre for Muslim States and Societies at The University of Western Australia.

Body Responsible for Selection

The selection committee comprises—

(a) the Director, Centre for Muslim States and Societies, or nominee;

(b) the Postgraduate Co-ordinator in the School of Social and Cultural Studies, or nominee;

(c) the Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, or nominee;

(d) the Manager, Graduate Research and Scholarships Office, or nominee;

(e) a representative from Tethyan Copper; and

(f) up to two co-optees.

Selection Criteria

(1) Subject to (2), the scholarship is awarded to the applicant who, amongst those eligible, in the opinion of the selection committee best demonstrates academic achievement as evidenced by their academic record.

(2) In selecting the successful candidate, strong preference is given to graduates from universities in Baluchistan.

Selection Process
7.
Selection of the recipient is made through a competitive process by the selection committee having regard to the applicants' academic records.

Awarding Body
8.
The scholarship is awarded by the Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Duration of Award
9.
The scholarship is tenable for the duration of the course for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy or for three years, whichever is less.

Criteria for Continuation
10.
(1) An awardee must remain enrolled in the course for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

(2) Any proposal by an awardee to change from the research area indicated in the original application and letter of offer is subject to the approval of the Head of the School of Social and Cultural Studies and the Graduate Research School.

11.
Applicants must contact the Centre for Muslim States and Societies at The University of Western Australia for application details.

Administering Body
12.
The scholarship is administered by the Scholarships Office.

Publications 
13. Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Tethyan Copper Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
