Wesley Mission Perth Music Scholarships * [F12653]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. See also general conditions.

Wesley Mission Perth (Wesley Church), with its history of commitment to the community and to fine music, has established a scholarship programme to provide opportunities for students to pursue their musical development. The scholarships are administered in accordance with the following conditions.

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Wesley Mission Perth Music Scholarship.

Value and Availability
2.
At the discretion of the selection committee described in Clause 4, six scholarships of $1,500 or four scholarships of $2,000 are available in any one year.

Eligibility
3.
To be eligible to apply for a scholarship, a candidate must—

(a) be enrolled in a single or combined undergraduate degree course or a postgraduate or undergraduate diploma course in the School of Music at The University of Western Australia;

(b) if enrolled in an undergraduate degree course, have completed units to the value of at least 36 points towards the relevant degree course or course component; and

(c) be an instrumentalist.

Selection Committee
4.
The selection committee comprises—

(a) the Head of the School of Music, or nominee;

(b) the Minister of Wesley Church, or nominee; and

(c) a member of the School of Music staff nominated by the Head of School.

Selection Criteria and Process
5.(1)
The scholarship is awarded to the applicant who, in the opinion of the selection committee, best demonstrates:

(a) academic merit;

(b) musical ability; and

(c) that their musical development would benefit from receipt of a scholarship.

(2) In assessing the applicant's musical ability the selection committee will take account of the recommendation of the Head of the School of Music who consults with relevant staff members.

(3) In determining the benefits which would accrue to the applicant from receipt of a scholarship the selection committee will have regard to the application.

(4) The School of Music shortlists applicants in accordance with the selection criteria.

(5) Shortlisted applicants are interviewed by the selection committee.

Duration of Award
6.
The scholarship is tenable for one year only.

Advertisement
7.
The scholarships are advertised by the School of Music in time for an application to be submitted by October for award in the following year.

Applications
8.
Written applications, limited to one page and addressing the selection criteria in Clause 5, must be submitted to the Head of the School of Music by the advertised closing date.

Performances
9.(1)
The scholarship recipient is given the opportunity to perform at Wesley Church, Perth, under the direction of the Wesley Church Minister and Wesley Church Music Director.

(2) The performances are normally given during a minimum of two services of worship1 per semester for a total of 10 to 20 minutes per service (5–10 minutes prior to worship, 3–5 minutes during the offering, 10–12 minutes during the once per month Holy Communion) or may involve participation in other services of worship by negotiation.

1 Services commence at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
