Woodside Valley Foundation Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Chinese Studies * [F12711]Except as provided in the following conditions, the conditions of the University Postgraduate Awards (International Students) apply to this scholarship, under the terms and conditions for such awards in force at the time, as published on the web site http://www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/page/48791. These conditions must be read in conjunction with the regulations governing International Postgraduate Research Scholarships defined by the Department of Education, Science and Training or Scholarships for International Research Fees provided by The University of Western Australia. The Woodside Valley Foundation has agreed to provide a scholarship to be called the Woodside Valley Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship in Chinese Studies with an annual living stipend of $20,000 over three years, a possible additional $10,000 for a six month extension and a $3000 relocation allowance to enable an eligible postgraduate student to pursue their interest in and study into contemporary China. The scholarship is governed in accordance with the following conditions. Title 1. The scholarship is called the Woodside Valley Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship in Chinese Studies. Purpose 2. The purpose of the scholarship is to further interest in and study into contemporary China and to enable an eligible postgraduate student to pursue research into contemporary China at The University of Western Australia (the University). Value 3.(1) The annual value of the scholarship is $20,000. (2) A relocation allowance of $3000 is provided to assist the student in travel and relocation from China to Australia. (3) A further sum of $10,000 is available if a student is successful in applying for a six-month extension. Eligibility requirements 4.(1) To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must— (a) be a citizen of a country other than Australia or New Zealand; (b) be a graduate of a recognised University; and (c) be eligible to enrol or be enrolled as a full-time student in a PhD and intend to pursue research in Chinese Studies in the discipline of Asian Studies within the School of Social and Cultural Studies in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University. (2) To be eligible to take up the scholarship the student must be enrolled as a full-time student in a PhD and pursue research in Chinese Studies in the discipline of Asian Studies within the School of Social and Cultural Studies in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University. Body Responsible for Selection 5. The selection committee for the scholarship comprises: (a) the Head of the School of Social and Cultural Studies, or nominee, as Chair; (b) the Associate Dean (Research); (c) the Chair of the Discipline Group of Asian Studies; (d) the Director of the Confucius Institute, or nominee; and (e) a representative of the Woodside Valley Foundation, nominated by the Foundation. Selection Criteria 6. The scholarship is awarded by the selection committee to the applicant who, in its opinion, best demonstrates in their application and supporting documentation— (a) academic achievement as evidenced by their academic records; (b) evidence of strong research capability; (c) how they will benefit from the proposed scholarship as set out in their application form; and (d) their interest in research and study into contemporary China. Selection Process 7.(1) Selection of the recipient is made by the selection committee having regard to the applicant's academic records, and completed application form and referee's reports. (2) The selection committee may interview short-listed applicants. Awarding Body 8. The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, on the recommendation of the selection committee. Duration of Award 9.(1) Subject to 10, the period of tenure is up to three years for the degree of PhD. (2) The University may approve an extension of up to six months for international students enrolled in a PhD where the award holder formally applies for an extension and the University is satisfied that the grounds for extension are related to their research and beyond the control of the award holder. (3) Periods of study undertaken towards the degree prior to commencement of the award or undertaken during suspension of the award are deducted from the maximum period of tenure. Criteria for Continuation of Scholarship 10. Continuation of the scholarship is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress and remaining enrolled in the course for which the scholarship is awarded. Concurrent Awards 11. The scholarship may be held concurrently with other scholarships, providing that the conditions of the other scholarship so permit. Application Procedure 12.(1) Written applications are called for when necessary and must be submitted to the discipline of Asian Studies in the School of Social and Cultural by the advertised date. (2) Written applications must attach a complete academic transcript of the applicant's tertiary education, two referees' reports and include a statement regarding the applicant's interest in research and contemporary China. Administering Body 13. The scholarship is administered by the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Publications 14. Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Woodside Valley Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship in Chinese Studies must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
