Apache Energy Geoscience Scholarship * [F27280]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

Apache Energy provides funds annually for a scholarship to assist and encourage a meritorious Bachelor of Science student to continue their undergraduate studies in geology or geoscience at The University of Western Australia ('the University') with a view to pursuing a career in the field of geoscience.

Title
1. The scholarship is called the Apache Energy Geoscience Scholarship.

Purpose
2. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist and encourage a Bachelor of Science student who has demonstrated a high level of academic achievement to continue and complete their course in geology or geoscience.

Availability 
3. One scholarship is available each year.

Value
4.
The value of the scholarship is $5000.

Eligibility Requirements
5.(1)
To be eligible to apply for the scholarship an applicant must—

(a) be enrolled full-time in a Bachelor of Science course; and

(b) have successfully completed units to a value of 96 points in a Bachelor of Science  course, including the following units leading to a major in geology—

EART1104 Earth and Environment: Geological Perspectives;
EART1105 Earth and Environment: Dynamic Planet;
EART2231 Earth Materials;
EART2232 Field Geology;
EART2233 Earth History Methods; and
EART2234 Structural and Metamorphic Geology.

(2) To be eligible to take up the scholarship, the recipient must be enrolled full-time in EART3348 Geological Mapping Part 1 or EART3349 Geological Mapping Part 2.

Selection Criteria
6.
The scholarship is awarded to the student with the highest average mark in the Level 1 units and  Level 2 core units that lead to a Geology Major, taken over no more than four consecutive semesters.

Selection Process
7.
Selection of the recipient is made by the Board of Examiners in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.

Awarding Body
8.
 The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.

Method of Payment
9.(1)
The scholarship is paid in two equal instalments.

(2) One instalment is paid on or after the census date in each of the relevant semesters.

Duration of Award
10. The scholarship is tenable for two semesters which are normally consecutive.

Concurrent Awards
11.
The scholarship cannot be held concurrently with the Rio Tinto Scholarship in Geoscience but may be held concurrently with another external or University award provided that the conditions of the concurrent award so permit.

Criteria for Continuation of Scholarship
12.
Continuation of the scholarship from semester to semester is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules for the course and remaining enrolled full-time in the course for which the scholarship is awarded

Administering Body
13.
The scholarship is administered by the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.

Student Opportunity
14.
Apache Energy endeavours to provide an opportunity for the recipient to undertake paid vacation work experience with the company during a summer vacation period, and mentoring opportunities.

Publications
15.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Apache Energy Geoscience Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
