Jack and Eleanor Bendat Rural Indigenous Scholarship * [F18114]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

Jack and Eleanor Bendat have donated a sum of money to establish the Jack and Eleanor Bendat Rural Indigenous Scholarship at The University of Western Australia (the University) to assist and encourage meritorious Indigenous students from regional Western Australia who are experiencing financial hardship to continue and complete their first undergraduate degree course.  A fund is established and the scholarship is administered in accordance with the following conditions.

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Jack and Eleanor Bendat Rural Indigenous Scholarship.

Purpose
2.
The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage and assist meritorious Indigenous students from regional Western Australia who have successfully completed 48 points of their first undergraduate degree course to continue study in a course at the University, including honours if applicable.

Value
3.
The value of the scholarship is $5000 per annum, which is provided from the annual income of the fund after capitalisation in accordance with Senate policy.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must—

(a) be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia;  

(b) be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander;

(c) have successfully completed the first 48 points of their first undergraduate degree course at the University, and intend to continue on a full-time basis; and

(d) be from a rural or regional area of Western Australia (as defined under eligibility criteria for Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships, available at www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/home/undergrad/cmmnwlth_lrn_schols).

Body Responsible for Selection
5.
The selection committee for the scholarship comprises:

(a) the Dean of the School of Indigenous Studies, or nominee; and

(b) the Chair of the Academic Board, or nominee; and

(c) an Indigenous member of the academic staff of the University.

Selection Criteria
6.
The scholarship is awarded by the selection committee to the applicant who, in its opinion, best demonstrates—

(a) academic achievement as evidenced by their academic record; and

(b) financial hardship through being in receipt of a means-tested Commonwealth income support payment (such as Austudy, ABSTUDY, Youth Allowance etc) or by submitting a statement of financial hardship supported by a Statutory Declaration. 

Selection Process
7.
Selection of the recipient is made by the selection committee having regard to the applicants’ academic records and completed application forms.

(2) The selection committee may interview short-listed applicants.

Awarding Body
8.
The scholarship is awarded by the School of Indigenous Studies on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Method of Payment
9.(1)
The scholarship is paid in equal instalments.

(2) Each instalment is paid on or following the first semester or second semester census dates as relevant. 

Duration of Award
10.
The scholarship is available for the remainder of the course for which the scholarship is awarded, including an honours course where applicable.

Concurrent Awards
11.
The scholarship may be held concurrently with another external or University award provided that the conditions of the concurrent award so permit.

Criteria for Continuation of Scholarship
12.
Continuation of the scholarship is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules for the course and remaining enrolled in the course for which the scholarship is awarded.

Application Procedure
13.(1)
The School of Indigenous Studies advertises the scholarships internally, calling for applications at the end of second semester in time for commencement of study the following year.

(2) Applications must be submitted to the School of Indigenous Studies on the application form available from the School, by the advertised closing date.

Administering Body
14.
The scholarship is administered by the School of Indigenous Studies.

Publications
15.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Jack and Eleanor Bendat Rural Indigenous Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
