BHP Billiton Honours Scholarship in the UWA Business School * [F23607]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

The statutory entity, the Faculty of Business, is known as the UWA Business School.

BHP Billiton donates a sum of money annually to provide up to four scholarships valued at $20,000 each to encourage students who have demonstrated academic excellence and an interest in economic, business or management issues relevant to the resources sector to undertake an honours course leading to a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree or Bachelor of Economics (Honours) degree in the UWA Business School at The University of Western Australia (the University). The scholarship is awarded in accordance with the following conditions.

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the BHP Billiton Honours Scholarship in the UWA Business School.

Purpose
2.
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist and encourage students who have demonstrated academic excellence to undertake the honours course leading to the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree or Bachelor of Economics (Honours) degree in the Business School, with a research project in economic, business or management issues relevant to the resources sector.

Value
3.
The total value of the scholarship is $20,000.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to apply for the scholarship an applicant must—

(a) be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia;

(b) have demonstrated academic excellence in their undergraduate studies; and

(c) have been accepted into an honours course leading to the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree or Bachelor of Economics (Honours) degree in the UWA Business School.

Body Responsible for Selection

The selection committee for the scholarship comprises:

(a) the Dean of the UWA Business School, or nominee (as Chair); and

(b) the Deputy Dean (Operations) of the UWA Business School, or nominee; and

(c) a BHP Billiton representative.

Selection Criteria and Process

(1) The scholarship is awarded to the applicant who, in the opinion of the selection committee, best demonstrates—

(a) academic achievement as evidenced by their academic record; and

(b) a proposed research project in economic, business or management issues relevant to the resources sector.

(2) The award is made principally on the basis of academic achievement, but if the selection committee judges that the difference between the academic achievement of applicants is insignificant, it may also take into account other factors such as—

(a) leadership positions held at school, university, in the workplace or in the community; and

(b) participation in community, voluntary or other work;

(c) community service; and

(d) sporting activities and achievements.

(3) The selection committee may interview short-listed applicants.

Awarding Body
7.
The scholarship is awarded by the UWA Business School, on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Method of Payment
8.
The scholarship is paid in two instalments, in the following manner:

(1) Tuition fees are paid on or before the census date in each semester directly to the University on the recipient’s behalf.

(2) The balance remaining after provision for tuition fees, is paid in two equal instalments directly to the recipient on or before the census date in each semester.

(3) The second payment of both (1) and (2) is conditional upon the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules of the course in relation to which the scholarship is awarded.

Duration of Award
9.
The scholarship is tenable for two semesters which are normally consecutive.

Concurrent Awards
10.
(1) Normally the BHP Billiton Honours Scholarship in the UWA Business School may not be held concurrently with any other external or University scholarship.

(2) In exceptional circumstances, the selection committee may determine, on the basis of a written application from the scholarship recipient, that the scholarship may be held concurrently with another external or University award, provided the conditions of the other award so permit.

Application Procedure

(1) The UWA Business School advertises the scholarship within the UWA Business School, and on the Scholarships Office web site.

(2) Written applications addressing the selection criteria must be accompanied by—

(a) a covering letter outlining the applicant's reasons for applying for the scholarship;

(b) an outline of the proposed honours dissertation topic;

(c) a curriculum vitae that includes details of—

(i) academic achievements; and

(ii) the following as appropriate—

  • leadership positions held at school, university, in the workplace or in the community;
  • participation in community, voluntary or other work;
  • community service; and
  • sporting activities and achievements.

(3) For applicants who have undertaken study at a tertiary institution other than the University, a copy of the applicant’s academic record from that institution.

(4) Applications must be submitted to the Faculty Administration Officer of the UWA Business School by the advertised closing date.

Administering Body
12.
The scholarship is administered by the UWA Business School.

Publications
13.
Any, thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the BHP Billiton Honours Scholarship in the UWA Business School must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
