Central City Medical Centre UWA General Practice Scholarship * [F15113]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

Introduction

The Central City Medical Centre has made available a sum of money for the purpose of establishing a fund for three years to provide three scholarships to assist students enrolled in Level 3 of the course for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at this University (the MBBS course) to develop a small-scale research project that is of relevance to the medical centre and is achievable within a one year timeframe. The research will be undertaken as part of the assessment requirements for the Community-based Care for Chronic Conditions option within the MBBS course. Each recipient will also have the opportunity to gain additional clinical experience by spending time in consultations with the general practioners at the Central City Medical Centre over the following two years of their course during their vacation time and any General Practice attachments completed as part of the MBBS course1. The scholarships are awarded in accordance with the following conditions:

1 Scholarship holders may wish to request their Level 5 GP placement at the Central City Medical Centre and will be given first preference of a placement.

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Central City Medical Centre UWA General Practice Scholarship.

Purpose
2.
The purpose of the scholarship is—

(a) to raise the profile of general practice amongst students in the MBBS course;

(b) to create the opportunity for students to have greater exposure to a busy metropolitan general practice;

(c) to create the opportunity for students to undertake a small-scale research project based at the Central City Medical Centre;

(d) on the basis of the research projects undertaken by recipients, to inform clinical service development at the Central City Medical Centre;

(e) to encourage recipients to present their project at a primary care conference if this is an option they wish to consider.

Value
3.
The annual value of the scholarship is $1000 for a maximum period of three years subject to the conditions set out in Clause 9.

Eligibility Requirements
4.
To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must—

(a) be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia; and

(b) be eligible to enrol in IMED3411 Community-based Care for Chronic Conditions in the MBBS course.

Body Responsible for Selection
5.
The selection committee for the scholarship comprises—

(a) the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, or nominee;

(b) the Professor of General Practice, or nominee; and

(c) a representative of the Central City Medical Centre.

Selection Criteria
6.
The scholarship is awarded by the selection committee to the applicant who, in its opinion, best demonstrates—

(a) academic excellence as evidenced by their academic record;

(b) commitment to general practice and research by way of their research proposal; and

(c) that they will benefit from the proposed internship as set out in their application documentation.

Selection Process
7.(1)
Selection of the recipient is made by the selection committee having regard to the applicant's academic record, research proposal and supporting documentation.

(2) The selection committee may interview short-listed applicants.

Awarding Body
8.
The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Method of Payment
9.(1)
A successful applicant is paid $1000 at the commencement of the year in which they enrol in Level 3 of the MBBS course.

(2) A recipient may be eligible for a further payment of $1000 for each of Levels 4 and 5 of the course subject to satisfying the selection committee of continued progress with their research and a continued relationship with the Central City Medical Centre.

Duration of Award
10.
The scholarship is tenable for up to three years subject to the conditions set out in Clause 9.

Application Procedure
11.(1)
Written applications are called for annually and must be submitted to the Manager (Student Affairs) of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences by 4 p.m. on 30 October.

(2) Written applications must include the applicant's academic record, research proposal and supporting documentation.

Administering Body
12.
The scholarship is administered by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

Publications
13.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the UWA General Practice Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.

Intellectual Property
14. Intellectual property is governed by the University's Intellectual Property policy available on the University's website.
