Indran Chelva Memorial Scholarship * [F26447]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

Friends of Dr Indran Chelvanayagam have contributed $60,000 to establish a fund for the purpose of providing, in perpetuity, an annual travel scholarship in rural ophthalmology for students enrolled in the course for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS) at The University of Western Australia ('the University'). The scholarship is established and administered in accordance with the following conditions.

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Indran Chelva Memorial Travel Scholarship.

Purpose
2.
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist and enable a student who intends to pursue a career in rural and remote medicine, to spend a week during their Level 5 studies or immediately prior to the commencement of their Level 6 studies accompanying an ophthalmologist who is providing ophthalmic care to remote communities in Western Australia, by contributing towards expenses associated with travel, including airfares, accommodation and ancillary costs.

Value
3.
The value of the scholarship consists of the annual income after capitalisation in accordance with Senate policy on a capital sum of $60,000.

Eligibility Requirements
4.(1)
To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must—

(a) be enrolled in the MB BS course at the University;

(b) be enrolled, or eligible to enrol, in either—

(i) IMED5531 General Practice Ophthalmology Part 1 and IMED5532 General Practice and Ophthalmology Part 2;

(ii) RMED5571 Rural Clinical Practice Part 1 and RMED5572 Rural Clinical Practice Part 2; and

(c) be able to demonstrate a commitment to a future career in rural and remote medicine by way of one of the following:

(i) being enrolled in the rural and remote medicine specialisation of the MB BS course;

(ii) completion of, or current enrolment in, one or more units in rural and remote medicine;

(iii) active membership of the SPINRPHEX Rural Health Club (attending three or more meetings per year);

(iv) active involvement in rural and remote community service.

Body Responsible for Selection
5.
The selection committee for the scholarship comprises—

(a) the Chair of General Practice, or nominee;

(b) the Head of the Rural Clinical School, or nominee; and

(c) the Ophthalmology Course Co-ordinator, or nominee.

Selection Criteria
6.
The scholarship is awarded to the applicant who, in the opinion of the selection committee, best demonstrates in their application and supporting documentation—

(a) academic achievement as evidenced by their academic record;

(b) a commitment to a future career in rural and remote medicine; and

(c) an interest in rural ophthalmology.

Selection Process
7.(1)
Selection of the recipient is made by the selection committee having regard to the applicants’ academic records, completed application and supporting documentation.

(2) The selection committee may interview short-listed applicants.

Awarding Body
8.
The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Method of Payment
9.
The scholarship is paid as a lump sum immediately prior to the commencement of travel.

Concurrent Awards
10.
The scholarship may be held concurrently with any other external or University award provided that the conditions of the concurrent award so permit.

Application Procedure
11.(1)
Written applications for the scholarship are called for annually and must be submitted to the Manager (Student Affairs) of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences by the advertised closing date.

(2) Applications addressing the selection must be accompanied by—

(a) a personal statement of 500 to 700 words detailing the applicant’s commitment to a career in rural and remote medicine and interest in rural ophthalmology; and

(b) relevant supporting documentation.

Administering Body 
12.
The scholarship is administered by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

Commencement of Travel
13.
Unless otherwise agreed with the selection committee, the recipient of the scholarship must commence the travel for which it is awarded within twelve months of receiving the award.

Publications
14.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Indran Chelva Memorial Travel Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
