Craig Coleman Scholarship * [F21552]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

The statutory entity, the Faculty of Business, is known as the UWA Business School.

Craig Coleman has donated a sum of $50,000 to establish a fund to provide two scholarships, one available from 2008 and one available from 2009, to assist and encourage meritorious students for whom educational opportunities are limited due to factors associated with personal, family and/or financial circumstances which may otherwise prevent them from undertaking full-time study in an undergraduate course in the UWA Business School at The University of Western Australia (the University).

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Craig Coleman Scholarship.

Purpose
2.
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist and encourage a meritorious student for whom educational opportunities are limited due to factors associated with personal, family and/or financial circumstances to undertake full time study in an undergraduate course leading to a pass degree in the UWA Business School.

Value
3.(1)
The total value of the scholarship is $25,000.

(2) The scholarship is distributed as follows: $8000 in the first year; $8000 in the second year; and $9000 in the third year.

Eligibility requirements
4.
To be eligible to apply for the scholarship an applicant must—

(a) be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia;

(b) have been accepted into an undergraduate course in the UWA Business School;

(c) able to demonstrate that their educational opportunities are limited due to personal, family and/or financial circumstances.

Body Responsible for Selection
5.
The selection committee for the scholarship comprises—

(a) the Dean of the UWA Business School or nominee as Chair;

(b) the Deputy Dean (Operations) of the UWA Business School, or nominee;

(c) Craig Coleman, or nominee.

Selection Criteria
6.
The scholarship is awarded to the applicant who, in the opinion of the selection committee, best demonstrates through their application and supporting documentation—

(a) academic achievement as evidenced by their academic record;

(b) personal, family and/or financial circumstances 1 which may prevent them from undertaking full-time study in an undergraduate course offered by the UWA Business School; and

(c) leadership potential.

Awarding Body
7.
The scholarship is awarded by the UWA Business School, on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Method of Payment
8.(1)
The scholarship is paid in two instalments.

(2) One instalment is normally paid on or following the census date in each of first and second semesters. 

(3) Payment of the second instalment is dependent on the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules of the course in relation to which the scholarship is awarded.

Duration of Award
9.
The scholarship is tenable for three years of an undergraduate pass degree course in the UWA Business School.

Concurrent Awards
10.
In exceptional circumstances to be determined by the Dean, the scholarship may be held concurrently with another external or University award.

Application Procedure
11.(1)
Written applications addressing the selection criteria must be accompanied by—

(a) a covering letter outlining the applicant's reasons for applying for the scholarship;

(b) a curriculum vitae that includes details of—

(i) academic achievements; and

(ii) the following, as appropriate—

    · sporting activities and achievements;

    · community service;

    · participation in community, voluntary or paid work; and

    · leadership positions held at school, in the work place or in the community.

(c) proof of personal, financial or family circumstances; and

(d) a statement of no more than 250 words indicating how the award of this scholarship will impact their life now and in the future.

(2) Applications must be submitted to the Faculty Administrative Officer of the UWA Business School by the advertised closing date.

Administering Body
12.
The scholarship is administered by the UWA Business School.

Publications
13.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Craig Coleman Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.

Intellectual Property
14.
Intellectual property is governed by the University's Intellectual Property policy on the University's web site.

1 Personal, family and/or financial circumstances may be demonstrated by the applicant by—
    (a) being in receipt of a means-tested Commonwealth income support payment (such as Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance etc.);
    (b) submitting a Statutory Declaration(s) providing information which demonstrates the relevant personal, family and/or financial circumstances.
