General Conditions for Scholarships for
Coursework Students except as set out in the
conditions that follow.
The Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences and the Centre for
English Language Teaching (CELT), in recognition of the
contribution made to science by Professor Barry Marshall and his
wife Adrienne Marshall, offer up to three scholarships to
students from the Beijing Huija Private School to undertake the
English Language Bridging Course through CELT and a programme or
major in the Bachelor of Science1 which is
administered by the Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences.
Title
1. The scholarship is called the combined Adrienne
English Scholarship and Barry Marshall Science Scholarship.
Purpose
2. The purpose of the scholarship is to allow the
recipients to improve their English language skills, to acquire
study skills relevant to an Australian university and to complete
the Bachelor of Science1 course without paying full
tuition fees.
Value
3. The scholarship covers at least one third of the fees
for those units that make up the minimum requirements for the
English Language Bridging Course and the Bachelor of
Science1 course.
Eligibility Requirements
4. To be eligible for consideration applicants
must—
(a) be students at the
Beijing Huija Private School;
(b) meet all entry
requirements normally applied to the English Language Bridging
course and the Bachelor of Science1 course;
(c) not be Australian
citizens or permanent residents of Australia; and
(d) be liable for
international full fees.
Body Responsible for Selection
5. The selection committee for the scholarship
comprises—
(a) the Dean of the
Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences;
(b) the Director of
CELT; and
(c) the Director of the
Confucius Institute.
Selection Criteria and Process
6. The scholarship is awarded by the selection committee
to applicants who, in its opinion, best demonstrates academic
achievement.
Method of Payment
7. The scholarship takes the form of a waiver of the
appropriate portion of the total fees payable by the
recipient.
Duration of Award
8. The scholarship is tenable for the full length of the
required English language course and a full-time three year
enrolment in the Bachelor of Science course.1
Concurrent Award
9. The scholarship may be held concurrently with another
external or University award provided that the conditions of the
concurrent award so permit.
Continuation of Award
10. Continuation of the scholarship is subject to the
recipient—
(a) remaining enrolled
in the course in relation to which it is awarded;
(b) making satisfactory
progress in accordance with the rules for the course in relation
to which it is awarded; and
(c) remaining liable
for international full fees.
Application Procedure
11. The Principal of the Beijing Huija Private
School—
(a) calls for
application;
(b) short-list the
applications and provide the Faculty of Life and Physical
Sciences with—
(i) a short list of
five applicants; and
(ii) a summary of the
school's reasons for short-listing each candidate.
Administering Body
12. The scholarship is administered by the Faculty of
Life and Physical Sciences.
Publications
13. Any dissertation or other publication resulting from
study undertaken during the tenure of the scholarship must
acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the
University by-line.
