Linda Cotton (Vatskalis) Memorial Scholarship * [F15112]An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow. Family, friends and colleagues of Linda Cotton (Vatskalis) have donated money to establish the Linda Cotton (Vatskalis) Memorial Fund. The Cotton family has requested that the fund be used to establish the Linda Cotton (Vatskalis) Memorial Scholarship to enable a student enrolled in a unit in the Bachelor of Laws degree course which includes discussion of Indigenous issues, to undertake a project that relates to the student’s demonstrated interest in the relationship between the Australian legal system and the Indigenous peoples of Australia. The scholarship is established and administered in accordance with the following conditions. Title 1. The scholarship is called the Linda Cotton (Vatskalis) Memorial Scholarship. Value 2. The scholarship is provided from the annual income of the fund after capitalisation in accordance with Senate policy. Eligibility Requirements 3. To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must— (a) be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia; and (b) be a currently enrolled student in the course for the Bachelor of Laws single degree or in a combined course including a Bachelor of Laws component at The University of Western Australia; and (c) have completed the following units: (i) LAWS1101 Contract I; (ii) LAWS1102 Contract II; (iii) LAWS1105 Criminal Law I; (iv) LAWS1106 Criminal Law II; (v) LAWS1107 Torts I; (vi) LAWS1108 Torts II; (vii) LAWS1130 Legal Process; (viii) LAWS2204 Property I; and (ix) LAWS2205 Property II. Body Responsible for Selection 4. The selection committee for the scholarship comprises: (a) the Dean of the Faculty of Law, or nominee; (b) a representative from the Cotton family, or nominee; and (c) a member of the Faculty of Law or a qualified lawyer with expertise in Indigenous people and the Law, or nominee. Selection Criteria 5. The scholarship is awarded by the selection committee to the applicant who, in its opinion, best demonstrates in their completed application and supporting documentation— (a) the need for financial assistance to engage in a project that will enhance the student's knowledge of the relationship between the Australian legal system and the Indigenous peoples of Australia; (b) an interest in social justice; and (c) an interest in having Indigenous issues more widely debated, understood and addressed. Selection Process 6.(1) Selection of the recipient is made by the selection committee having regard to the applicant's academic record, application and referee reports in the context of the selection criteria. (2) The selection committee may interview short-listed applicants. Awarding Body 7. The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Law on the recommendation of the selection committee. Method of Payment 8. The scholarship is paid in a single payment on or before the commencement of the project. Application Procedure 9. (1) Written applications are called for annually and must be submitted to the Law School reception by the advertised closing date. (2) Written applications must include a statement regarding the applicant's interest in social justice and Indigenous issues, a proposal for the use of the scholarship funds and at least two referees' reports. Administering Body 10. The scholarship is administered by the Faculty of Law. Publications 11. Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Linda Cotton (Vaskalis) Memorial Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
