Davis Undergraduate Scholarship in Palliative Care * [F7765]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

Mrs N D Davis having donated a sum of money to encourage interest in the area of palliative care by providing a scholarship to enable students enrolled in the course for the Bachelor of Medicine and the Bachelor of Surgery at The University of Western Australia to undertake elective studies in this area at an Australian or international palliative care service, a fund is established for the purpose and the scholarship is administered in accordance with the following conditions.

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Davis Undergraduate Scholarship in Palliative Care.

Purpose
2.
The purpose of the scholarship is—

(a) to assist and encourage students enrolled in the course for the Bachelor of Medicine and the Bachelor of Surgery  to undertake a six to eight week elective in the field of palliative care; and

(b) to encourage and enable students to extend their knowledge and experience of palliative care by undertaking their elective at a palliative care centre outside Western Australia which may include a hospice, palliative care unit, hospital-based palliative care consultancy or community-based palliative care service.

Value
3.
The value of the scholarship is 75 per cent of the annual income of the fund after capitalisation in accordance with Senate policy, or $3000, whichever is the greater.

Eligibility Requirements
4.(1)
To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must—

(a) be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia;

(b) be enrolled in Level 5 of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree course at the time of application.

(2) To take up the scholarship a student must have successfully completed all Level 5 units and be enrolled in Level 6 units at the time of award.

Body Responsible for Selection
5.
The selection committee for the scholarship comprises:

(a) the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, or nominee;

(b) a senior academic member of staff at UWA involved in the field of palliative care, or nominee;

(c) a current medical practitioner specialising in palliative care, invited by the member described in (b).

Selection Criteria

The scholarship is awarded by the selection committee to the applicant who, in its opinion, best demonstrates—

(a) academic merit; and

(b) a particular interest in palliative care, as outlined in the personal statement described in clause 11.

Selection Process
7.(1)
Selection of the recipient is made by the selection committee having regard to—

    (a) the applicant's academic record:

    (b) the personal statement referred to in clause 11.

(2) The selection committee may interview short-listed applicants.

Awarding Body
8.
The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Method of Payment
9.
The scholarship is paid in one lump sum immediately prior to the beginning of the elective.

Conditions of Award
10.
The scholarship is conditional upon the recipient—

(a) remaining enrolled in the course for which the scholarship is awarded; and

(b) agreeing to provide a written report to the donor on completion of the elective via the Faculty Office.

Application Procedure
11.
Written applications, including a one– to two–page typed A4 personal statement by the applicant, including relevant personal or professional experience and the aims of the elective at the destination they have selected, are called for annually in the first semester by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, and must be submitted to the Manager (Student Affairs) of the Faculty by the advertised closing date.

Administering Body
12.
The scholarship is administered by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

Publications
13.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Davies Undergraduate Scholarship in Palliative Care must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.

Intellectual property is governed by the University's Intellectual Property policy available on the University's web site.
