D. C. Cruickshank Family Scholarship * [F15133]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

Mrs Shirley Cruickshank having donated an initial sum of $21,000 to establish a fund to provide a scholarship for a meritorious young Indigenous woman who is  experiencing financial hardship to encourage her to pursue a full-time undergraduate degree course at The University of Western Australia, a fund is established and the scholarship is administered in accordance with the following conditions. 

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the D. C. Cruickshank Family Scholarship.

Purpose
2.
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist and encourage young Indigenous women to enrol in an undergraduate degree course at The University of Western Australia.

Value
3.
The scholarship is provided from the annual income of the fund after capitalisation in accordance with Senate policy.

Eligibility Requirements
4.
To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant—

(a) must be—

(i) female;

(ii) Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and

(iii) resident in Western Australia; and

(b) must not have reached the age of 19 by 1 March of the year prior to that for which application for entry to the University is made.

(2) To be eligible to receive a scholarship a student must be—

(a) enrolled full-time in the first 48 points of their first undergraduate degree course; or

(b) enrolled full-time in the Aboriginal Orientation Course at the University of Western Australia.

(3) Preference is given to applicants who completed their secondary studies at the Presbyterian Ladies College (PLC), Peppermint Grove, Western Australia.

Selection Process
5.(1)
If, in the opinion of the Principal of PLC, there is an eligible student at PLC, the Principal makes a recommendation to the School of Indigenous Studies.

(2) If there is no eligible student at PLC, the selection committee meets to consider applications.

Selection Committee
6.
The selection committee for the scholarship comprises—

(a) up to two senior members of staff from the School of Indigenous Studies; and

(b) an Indigenous academic staff member at the University.

Selection Criteria
7.
The scholarship is awarded to the applicant who, in the opinion of the awarding body, on the recommendation of the Principal of PLC or the Selection Committee, as appropriate, amongst those eligible, best demonstrates—

(a) academic achievement; and

(b) financial hardship, which may be demonstrated by the applicant—

(i) being in receipt of a means-tested Commonwealth income support payment (such as Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance etc); or

(ii) submitting a statement of financial hardship supported by a Statutory Declaration.

Awarding Body
8.
The scholarship is awarded by the School of Indigenous Studies on the recommendation of the Principal of PLC or the selection committee, as appropriate.

Method of Payment
9.(1)
The scholarship is paid in two equal instalments.

(2) Each instalment is paid on or following the first or second semester census dates as relevant. 

Duration of Award
10.
The scholarship  is tenable for two semesters, which are normally consecutive.

Concurrent Awards
11.
The scholarship may be held concurrently with another external or University award provided that the conditions of the concurrent award so permit.

Application Procedure
12.(1)
If there is no eligible student at PLC, the School of Indigenous Studies advertises the scholarship during second semester for award the following year. 

(2) Applications must be made using the application form available from the School of Indigenous Studies, and submitted to the School by the advertised closing date.

Administering Body
13.
The scholarship is administered by the School of Indigenous Studies.

Publications
14.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the D C Cruickshank Family Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.

Intellectual Property
15.
Intellectual property is governed by the University's Intellectual Property policy available on the University's web site.
