Centenary Trust for Women Dorothea Angus Memorial Scholarship * [F15994]An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow. This scholarship is established in support of the objectives of the UWA Centenary Trust for Women and in memory of the late Miss Dorothea Angus who was senior music teacher and organist at Perth College from 1938 to 1970. The Centenary Trust for Women Dorothea Angus Memorial Scholarship is provided to assist and encourage a meritorious female student experiencing financial hardship and for whom educational opportunities are limited, for example because of distance, economic disadvantage, cultural differences, disability or responsibility for the care of children, the ill or the elderly, to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree with Honours or a Bachelor of Music Education degree with Honours in the School of Music at The University of Western Australia. A fund is established for the scholarship and the scholarship is administered in accordance with the following conditions. Title 1. The scholarship is called the Centenary Trust for Women Dorothea Angus Memorial Scholarship. Purpose 2. The purpose the scholarship is to encourage and assist a meritorious female student enrolled in a course leading to a Bachelor of Music degree with Honours or a Bachelor of Music Education degree with Honours who is experiencing financial hardship associated with factors influencing educational disadvantage to pursue studies towards completion of their course. Value 3. The value of the scholarship is $4000. Eligibility Requirements 4.(1) To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must be— (a) a citizen or permanent resident of Australia; (b) female; (c) able to demonstrate financial hardship and that their educational opportunities are limited. (2) Financial hardship may be demonstrated by the applicant— (a) being in receipt of a means-tested Commonwealth income support payment (such as Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance etc); or (b) submitting a statement of financial hardship supported by a Statutory Declaration. (3) Educational opportunities may be shown to be limited, for example, because of distance, economic disadvantage, cultural differences, disability or responsibility for the care of children, the ill or the elderly. (4) To be eligible to take up a scholarship students must enrol in a course for the Bachelor of Music degree with Honours or the Bachelor of Music Education degree with Honours. (5) Unless permitted otherwise in exceptional circumstances, a student must enrol full time. Selection Criteria 5. The scholarship is awarded to the applicant who, in the opinion of the selection committee, best demonstrates through their application and supporting documentation— (a) academic achievement; (b) performance merit in either MUSC3402 Performance Major 6 or MUSC3412 Performance Minor 6; (c) financial hardship; (d) that their educational opportunities are limited; and (e) how the scholarship would assist in addressing the limitations referred to in (d). Body responsible for Selection 6. The selection committee for the scholarship comprises— (a) the Head of the School of Music, or nominee; (b) the Head of Academic Studies in the School of Music, or nominee; (c) the Head of Performance Studies in the School of Music, or nominee; Selection Process 7.(1) Selection of the recipient is made by the selection committee having regard to the applicant's academic record, completed application form and supporting documentation. (2) The selection committee may interview short-listed applicants. Application Procedure 8.(1) Applications addressing the selection criteria must be made on the application form available from the School of Music, and be accompanied by— (a) a brief curriculum vitae; (b) supporting documentary evidence for a claim of financial hardship. (2) The scholarship is advertised internally by the School of Music at the beginning of second semester each year. (3) Applications must be submitted to the Administrative Officer of the School of Music by the advertised closing date. Awarding Body 9. The scholarship is awarded by the School of Music, on the recommendation of the selection committee described in clause 6. Method of payment 10.(1) The scholarship is paid in two instalments. (2) One instalment is normally paid on or following the census date in each of the first and second semesters. (3) Payment of the second instalment is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules for the course in relation to which the scholarship is awarded. Duration of Award 11. The scholarship is tenable for two semesters which are normally consecutive. Concurrent Award 12. The scholarship may be held concurrently with another external or University award provided that the conditions of the concurrent award so permit. Administering Body 13. The scholarship is administered by the School of Music. Publications 14. Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the CTW Dorothea Angus Memorial Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
