Joanne Edmeades Indigenous Scholarship * [F20045]An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow. Mrs V. Ailsa Edmeades has donated $12,500 to establish a fund to provide an annual scholarship for five years. The scholarship is to encourage an Indigenous student to undertake a full-time undergraduate degree course at The University of Western Australia (the University) with preference given to students enrolled in arts, law or health sciences. The scholarship is administered in accordance with the following conditions. Title 1. The scholarship is called the Joanne Edmeades Indigenous Scholarship. Purpose 2. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist and encourage an Indigenous person to complete an undergraduate degree course at the University with preference given to students enrolled in arts, law or health sciences. Value 3. The value of the scholarship is $2500. Availability 4. One scholarship is available annually. Eligibility Requirements 5. To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must— (a) be an Indigenous student; (b) be enrolled in an undergraduate course, preferably in arts, law or health sciences at the University; (c) have completed units to the value of at least 42 points towards the relevant course; and (d) intend to work with an Indigenous community after graduation. Body Responsible for Selection 6. The selection committee for the scholarship comprises— (a) up to two senior members of staff from the School of Indigenous Studies; and (b) an Indigenous academic staff member of the University. Selection Criteria 7. The scholarship is awarded to the applicant who, in the opinion of the selection committee, best demonstrates through their application and supporting documentation— (a) academic achievement; and (b) a high level of commitment to future work with an Indigenous community; and (c) how they will benefit from the scholarship. Awarding Body 8. The scholarship is awarded by the School of Indigenous Studies on the recommendation of the selection committee. Method of Payment 9. (1) The scholarship is paid in two equal instalments. (2) One instalment is normally paid on or following the census date in each of the relevant semesters. (3) Payment of the second instalment is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules for the course in relation to which the scholarship is awarded. Duration of Award 10. The scholarship is tenable for two semesters, which are normally consecutive. Concurrent Awards 11. The scholarship may be held concurrently with another external or University award provided that the conditions of the concurrent award so permit. Application Procedure 12. (1) The School of Indigenous Studies advertises the scholarship during second semester for award the following year. (2) Applications must be made using the application form available from the School of Indigenous Studies, and submitted to the School by the advertised closing date. Administering Body 13. The scholarship is administered by the School of Indigenous Studies. Publications 14. Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Joanne Edmeades Indigenous Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
