UWA Fogarty Foundation City and Regional Scholarships * [F12185]An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow. Definitions In these conditions— 'regional area' means a regional area of Western Australia and is determined using the Australian Standard Geographic Classification (ASGc) Remoteness Area Classification; 'the University' or 'UWA' means The University of Western Australia; 'approved' means formally approved by the officer of the University designated to manage and administer the UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship under guidelines agreed by the University and the Fogarty Foundation; 'satisfactory progress' is as defined in the University's Undergraduate Handbook for the course in question. The UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarships have been established in conjunction with the Fogarty Foundation to provide senior secondary students who show significant academic potential together with a strong sense of community involvement and responsibility, with an opportunity to undertake an undergraduate degree of their choice at the University of Western Australia. 1.(1) There are two types of scholarships: (a) UWA Fogarty Foundation Regional Scholarship; and (b) UWA Fogarty Foundation City Scholarship. (2) An applicant may only apply for one type of scholarship. 2. The UWA Fogarty Foundation Regional Scholarship covers: (a) the up-front student contribution amount for the selected course; (b) ancillary costs of $1000 p.a.; and (c) accommodation fees at the University's Hall of Residence or, on approval, at another residential college affiliated to the University or, if approval is given on the grounds of exceptional circumstances, for accommodation elsewhere. 3. The UWA Fogarty Foundation City Scholarship covers: (a) the up-front student contribution amount for the selected course; and (b) ancillary costs of $1000 p.a. 4.(1) The scholarship is tenable for the duration of the undergraduate course for which it is awarded, including an Honours year if applicable, subject to the conditions set out in clause 8. (2) If the recipient transfers from the course for which the scholarship is awarded to another course of the University, the scholarship will continue for the duration of the original course provided that the recipient continues to meet the conditions set out in clause 8. 5. Recipients of the scholarship are expected to participate actively in a leadership and development programme which includes membership of the University's mentor scheme for students in their first academic year, participation in selected other development activities and biennial visits to their school of origin to promote university education in general, and the UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarships in particular, to Year 12 students. 6. To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must, at the time of application: (a) be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia; (b) have applied through the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) for a place at the University, nominating a course at the University as their first preference in the first round of offers; (c) be enrolled in at least five Tertiary Entrance Examination (TEE) subjects or equivalent in a Western Australian secondary school, or through the School of Isolated and Distance Education, which could reasonably be expected to lead to the calculation of a Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) to satisfy admission requirements for entry into the nominated course at this University; (d) for applicants for regional scholarships only: (i) normally reside in a regional area; and (ii) normally be enrolled at a secondary school in a regional area for at least the last two years of their secondary school education although in exceptional circumstances this may be waived. (e) have their application for the scholarship endorsed by their school principal, who is required to provide a report on their academic potential and their role in the community; (f) be willing to commit to participating in the leadership and development programme described in clause 5. 7. Applicants who are eligible for consideration under clause 6 are assessed on the basis of: (a) academic achievement and potential; and (b) demonstration of other outstanding achievements, abilities, leadership or community service. 8. Continuation of the scholarship from year to year is subject to the recipient: (a) making satisfactory progress in the previous year; (b) maintaining continuous enrolment at the University as a full-time student, unless otherwise approved; (c) continuing to participate fully in the leadership and development programme referred to in clause 5; (d) providing to the panel described in clause 9 an annual report outlining the leadership and development activities undertaken in the previous year; and (e) in the case of recipients of an accommodation allowance, continuing to reside at the University's hall of residence or other residential college affiliated with the University, unless approval is given otherwise on the grounds of exceptional circumstances. 9.(1) Recipients of the UWA Fogarty Foundation City and Regional Scholarships are selected and reviewed at a meeting held at the end of each academic year, in accordance with normal selection procedures. (2) The selection panel comprises a representative of the Fogarty Foundation and up to four representatives of the University. 10. An awardee may defer taking up a scholarship for up to one year after the offer is made. 11. Recipients must agree to— (a) their academic results being provided to members of the Board of Review each year; and (b) any dissertations or publications arising from a UWA Fogarty Foundation City or Regional Scholarship acknowledging the assistance of the scholarship. 12. The UWA Fogarty Foundation City or Regional Scholarship may be held in conjunction with a UWA student exchange scholarship, a UWA Excellence Award and/or Curriculum Council award but must not be held concurrently with any other undergraduate scholarship or award unless the scholarship and/or award is supplementary or complementary to the aims of the leadership and development programme referred to in Clause 5 and acceptance of the other scholarship or award has been approved by the Scholarships Office. 13. The number of scholarships available, and the proportion of regional and city scholarships may vary from year to year. 14. An additional scholarship known as the UWA Fogarty Foundation Beazley Medallist Scholarship is offered to the Beazley Medallist in the event the Beazley Medallist has not been awarded a city or regional scholarship as part of the normal scholarship selection process; 15. The terms and conditions for the UWA Fogarty Foundation Beazley Medallist Scholarship are: (1) The scholarship is equivalent in value to a city or regional scholarship, as appropriate. (2) The scholarship awardee may defer taking up the scholarship for up to one year after the offer is made. (3) Normally the UWA Fogarty Foundation Beazley Medallist Scholarship must not be held concurrently with any other undergraduate scholarship. (4) The scholarship recipient is invited to participate in the leadership and development programme described in clause 5. (5) Continuation of the scholarship from year to year is subject to the recipient: (a) making satisfactory progress in the previous year; and (b) maintaining continuous enrolment at the University as a full-time student, unless otherwise approved. |
