Frank Gamblen Scholarships [F7857]Frank Gamblen, a long-serving member of the academic staff of the then Department of Mathematics with a deep commitment to undergraduate teaching, having bequeathed to the University a sum of money to provide scholarships in accordance with broad conditions set out in his will, and the Senate having determined, under the authority conferred on it in the will, that the bequest be used to establish a fund to provide scholarships to assist undergraduate students to undertake study towards their degrees at an overseas institution, a fund is established and the scholarships are administered in accordance with the following regulations. 1. The annual interest of the fund, after capitalisation in accordance with Senate policy, is used to provide scholarships to assist students enrolled in undergraduate courses of the University, who are in their second or a later academic year, to undertake one or two semesters of study overseas for credit to their degrees by providing assistance with travel costs and study-related or maintenance costs. 2. Each scholarship is called a Frank Gamblen Scholarship. 3. The scholarships is administered by a sub-committee of the International Programmes Committee called the Frank Gamblen Scholarships Committee and comprising: (a) the Director of the International Centre as chair; (b) the Dean of the Graduate Research School; (c) three members of the International Programmes Committee nominated by that committee, one of whom will normally be from the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; (d) one member of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences nominated by the Faculty. 4. The number and value of scholarships in any year is determined by the committee, provided that the value of a scholarship must be no less than $3000. 5.(1) The committee must ensure that the scholarships are advertised on campus each year. (2) Applications for the scholarships must be made in writing to the Manager, Study Abroad and Student Exchange by the closing date advertised each year by the Study Abroad Office. 6. Selection for the scholarships is made on the basis of academic merit. 7. The scholarships are paid to awardees in full or in instalments as determined by the committee. 8. In the event that a student awarded a scholarship returns to Australia before completing the planned period of study, the committee will determine, after receiving a report from the student, whether any of the scholarship funds should be repaid. |
