Eveline Rosina Henty Scholarships [F12771]The late Eveline Rosina Glyde having left to The University of Western Australia the balance of the residuary trust fund created by her will to use the income from it to establish and maintain scholarships for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to support them during tertiary studies subject to certain conditions and these conditions having been varied by an Order (No.11542) dated 24 March 1977 of the Supreme Court of Western Australia, the scholarships are awarded under the following regulations. 1. The scholarships are called the Eveline Rosina Henty Scholarships. 2. The object of the scholarships is to enable Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to pursue either an award course or a bridging course at a public university in Western Australia. 3. The scholarships are open to any Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person who either is— (a) qualified; or (b) expects to qualify before the beginning of the next academic year for admission to a university award course or bridging course. 4.(1) Selection for the scholarship is made— (a) on the basis of demonstrated need for financial assistance to pursue tertiary studies and academic merit; and (b) taking note of the rankings provided by the Aboriginal centre of the relevant university. (2) The scholarships are awarded by a selection committee comprising: (a) the Chair of the Academic Board or nominee, as chair; (b) the Vice-Chancellor or nominee; and (c) a nominee of the Head of the School of Social and Cultural Studies who must be a senior academic staff member in Anthropology. 5. Each scholarship is awarded for one year in the first instance but, subject to the approval of the selection committee, may be renewed from year to year until the recipient completes the course. 6.(1) Subject to a requirement that a balance of $500 is maintained in the income account, the income from the fund is used each year in order to provide— (a) one scholarship tenable at a public university in Western Australia other than The University of Western Australia; and (b) scholarships up to the maximum number permitted by the available remaining funds tenable at The University of Western Australia. (2) The maximum allocation to an individual student must not be more than $5000 per annum in 2001 dollar terms, increased by an amount to be determined each year by the selection committee having regard to cost of living increase. 7. Applications for new scholarships will be invited by the School of Indigenous Studies which will advertise the scholarships to the Aboriginal centres or equivalent of the public universities in Western Australia and through other means if the selection committee so decides. 8. Each scholarship is paid in two instalments per year, continuation from semester to semester being subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in the previous semester and remaining enrolled in the course. 9. Unless the Senate directs otherwise, the unexpended income in any year will be carried forward and become part of the income available for expenditure in the following year. |
