Jennifer Inkster Memorial Law Scholarship * [F2537]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

Family members, colleagues, past students and other friends of the late Ms Jennifer Inkster having made donations to establish a fund in her memory for the purpose of providing a scholarship, to be called the Jennifer Inkster Memorial Law Scholarship, the fund and the scholarship are established and administered in accordance with the following conditions.

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Jennifer Inkster Memorial Law Scholarship.

Purpose
2.
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist female students commencing a course leading to a Bachelor of Laws degree at The University of Western Australia (the University) to undertake the Level 1 units towards the degree of the Bachelor of Laws.

Value
3.
(1) The scholarship is provided from the annual income of the fund after capitalisation in accordance with Senate policy.

(2) The value of and the number of scholarships is determined each year by the selection committee.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to apply for the scholarship an applicant must be—

(a) female;  

(b) enrolled, or eligible to enrol, as a full-time student in—

(i) Level 1 units of a Bachelor of Laws degree course (21180 or 21190); or

(ii) LAWS1130 Legal Process, LAWS1105 Criminal Law I, LAWS1106 Criminal Law II and non-law units to a minimum value of 24 points in a combined course which includes a Bachelor of Laws component.

Body Responsible for Selection

The selection committee for the scholarship comprises—

(a) the Dean of the Faculty of Law, or nominee; and

(b) the Associate Dean, or nominee.

Selection Criteria
6.
The scholarship is awarded to the applicant who, in the opinion of the selection committee, best demonstrates through their application and supporting documentation—

(a) the need for financial assistance to continue her studies; and

(b) an interest in social justice;

(c) an interest in having women's issues more widely debated, understood and better addressed.

Awarding Body
7.
The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Law on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Method of Payment
8.(1)
The scholarship is paid in two equal instalments.

(2) One instalment is normally paid on or following the census date in each semester.

(3) Payment of the second instalment is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules for the course in relation to which the scholarship is awarded.

Criteria for Continuation of Scholarship
9.
Continuation of the scholarship is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules for the course and remaining enrolled in the course for which the scholarship is awarded.

Duration of Award
10.
The scholarship is tenable for one year.

Concurrent Awards
11.
The scholarship may be held concurrently with another external or University award provided that the conditions of the concurrent award so permit.

Application Procedure
12. (1)
Written applications for the scholarship are called for annually and must be submitted to the Dean of the Faculty of Law by the advertised closing date.

(2) Applications must include:

(a) a statement addressing each of the eligibility criteria;

(b) a statutory declaration made by the applicant setting out her financial circumstances; and

(c) the names and contact details of no fewer than three referees who collectively are able to address, from personal knowledge of the candidate, all of the criteria referred to in  6(a), (b) and (c).

Administering Body
13.
The scholarship is administered by the Faculty of Law.

Publications
14.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publications resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Jennifer Inkster Memorial Law Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
