Jack Family and Great Southern Development Commission Scholarship in Restoration Ecology* [F18397].

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

The Jack Family Charitable Trust donates a sum of money annually to provide the Jack Family and Great Southern Development Commission Scholarship in Restoration Ecology to assist and encourage meritorious students for whom educational opportunities are limited because of educational and/or financial disadvantage, to undertake the Bachelor of Science in Restoration Ecology pass degree course or a Bachelor of Science pass degree course with a major in restoration ecology at The University of Western Australia Albany Centre (UWA Albany Centre). The scholarship is administered in accordance with the following conditions.

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Jack Family and Great Southern Development Commission Scholarship in Restoration Ecology.

Purpose
2.
The purpose of the scholarship is to increase the number of graduates in science qualified to work on restoring and rehabilitating damaged ecosystems, by encouraging and assisting meritorious students for whom educational opportunities are limited because of educational and/or financial disadvantage, to undertake a Bachelor of Science pass degree course specialising in restoration ecology.

Description of Scholarships
3. (1)
There are two types of scholarships available:

(a) a fee payment 1; or

(b) a cash payment. 2

(2) Students nominate at the time of submitting their application the type of scholarship for which they are applying.

Number and Value of Scholarships
4. (1)
Up to six scholarships are offered each year.

(2) The value of the scholarship for students undertaking the first 48 points of the course is equivalent to the value of the upfront student contribution fee payable by Commonwealth-supported students in the course in the calendar year for which the scholarship is awarded.

(3) The annual value of the scholarship for students undertaking other than the first 48 points of the course is equivalent to 50 per cent of the value of the upfront student contribution fee paid by Commonwealth-supported students in the course, in the applicable calendar year.

Eligibility Requirements
5. (1)
Subject to (2), to be eligible to take up a scholarship an applicant must enrol full-time in a Bachelor of Science pass degree course in Restoration Ecology, or a Bachelor of Science pass degree course with a major in restoration ecology, at the UWA Albany Centre, in the year for which the scholarship is awarded.

(2) In exceptional circumstances students enrolled in less than a full-time load may be eligible.

Body Responsible for Selection
6. (1)
The selection committee for the scholarship comprises:

(a) the Director of the UWA Albany Centre, or nominee (as Chair);

(b) the Director of the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management, or nominee;

(c) the Chairman of the Jack Family Charitable Trust, or nominee; and

(d) the Chief Executive Officer of the Great Southern Development Commission, or nominee.

(2) The Chair has a casting vote.

Selection Criteria
7.
The scholarship is awarded by the UWA Albany Centre, on the recommendation of the selection committee to the applicant who, in its opinion, best demonstrates through their academic record and completed application form:

(a) academic achievement; and

(b) educational disadvantage and/or financial hardship.

Advertisement and Application Procedure
8. (1)
The scholarship is advertised by the UWA Albany Centre in October each year.

(2) A second round may be held with a closing date in February and successful applicants notified before the commencement of first semester.

(3) The application form for the scholarship is available from the UWA Albany Centre or can be downloaded from http://www.albany.uwa.edu.au.

(4) The completed application form must be submitted to the Development Manager of the UWA Albany Centre by the advertised closing date.

Awarding Body
9.
The scholarship is awarded by the UWA Albany Centre on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Method of Payment
10. (1)
The scholarship is either a fee payment or a cash payment.

(2) The cash payment is paid in two equal amounts, on or following the census date in each of first and second semesters.

Duration of Award
11.
Subject to 12, the scholarship is tenable—

(a) for commencing students, for three years, which are normally consecutive;

(b) for continuing students, for the remaining full-time duration of the course.

Criteria for Continuation
12.
Continuation of the scholarship from year to year is subject to the recipient—

(a) making satisfactory progress in the previous academic year;

(b) maintaining continuous full-time enrolment in the course for which the scholarship is awarded unless previously approved otherwise by the selection committee.

Concurrent Awards
13.
The scholarship may be held concurrently with another award provided the conditions of the other award so permit.

Administering Body
14. The scholarships are administered by the UWA Albany Centre.

Publications
15.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of a Jack Family and Great Southern Development Commission Scholarship in Restoration Ecology must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
