Bartley Peter and Nellie Kakulas Scholarship in Law *

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is
governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the
General Conditions for Scholarships for
Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that
follow.
Bart Kakulas QC and Nellie Kakulas have donated the sum of
$50,000 to establish in perpetuity the Bartley Peter and Nellie
Kakulas Fund to provide a scholarship in the Faculty of Law at
The University of Western Australia (the University). The
scholarship is administered in accordance with the following
conditions.
Title
1. The scholarship is called the Bartley Peter and
Nellie Kakulas Scholarship in Law.
Purpose
2. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist and
encourage students in financial need who have completed a minimum
of 48 points in the Bachelor of Laws degree course at the
University to continue their studies.
Value
3. The scholarship is provided from the annual income of
the fund after capitalisation in accordance with Senate
policy.
Eligibility requirements
4. To be eligible for consideration for a scholarship an
applicant must—
(a) be a citizen or
permanent resident of Australia;
(b) be enrolled in the
Faculty of Law at the University;
(c) be in a position
to complete a minimum of 48 points towards the Bachelor of Laws
or the Bachelor of Laws component of a combined course by the end
of the year prior to the year in which the scholarship would
commence; and
(d) not be in a position to
complete units to the value of more than 144 points towards the
Bachelor of Laws degree by the end of the year in which the
scholarship would commence.
Body Responsible for Selection
5. The selection committee for the scholarship
comprises—
(a) the Dean of the Faculty
of Law, or nominee as Chair;
(b) the Associate Dean
(Undergraduate) of the Faculty of Law, or nominee;
(c) a senior academic
member of the Faculty nominated by the Chair of the selection
committee;
(d) a member of the Kakulas
family, or nominee.
Selection Criteria
6.(1) The scholarship is awarded by the selection
committee to the applicant who, in its opinion, best
demonstrates—
(a) financial need;
(b) an interest in Law, as
evidenced in their curriculum vitae or other application
documentation; and
(c) academic
achievement.
(2) Financial need may be
demonstrated by the applicant—
(a) being in receipt of a
means tested Commonwealth income support payment (such as
Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance etc.); or
(b) submitting a statement
of financial hardship and its impact on educational
opportunities.
Selection Process
7.(1) Selection of the recipient is made by the
selection committee having regard to the applicants’
academic records, completed application forms, supporting
documentation and referee reports.
(2) The selection committee may
interview short-listed applicants.
Awarding Body
8. The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Law, on
the recommendation of the selection committee described in Clause
5.
Method of Payment
9.(1) The scholarship is paid in two equal
instalments.
(2) One instalment is
normally paid on or following the census date in each
semester.
(3) Payment of the second
instalment is subject to the recipient remaining enrolled and
making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules of the
course for which the scholarship is awarded.
Duration of Award
10. The scholarship is tenable for two semesters which
are normally consecutive.
Application Procedure
11.(1) Written applications are called for annually and
must be submitted to the Senior Administrative Officer of the
Faculty of Law by the advertised closing date.
(2) Written applications
addressing the selection criteria must include—
(a) a curriculum vitae;
(b) a statement outlining
the applicant’s interest in Law; and
(c) supporting
documentation regarding financial need.
Administering Body
12. The scholarship is administered by the Faculty of
Law.
Publications
13. Any thesis, dissertation or other publication
resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in
receipt of the Bartley Peter and Nellie Kakulas Scholarship in
Law must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the
University by-line.
