Mannkal Foundation Honours Scholarship * [F13194]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

The Mannkal Foundation has committed a sum of money each year to establish and provide a scholarship for an honours student "to develop further interest and knowledge of institutions (i.e. practices and beliefs) and laws that underpin societies and their States that are liberal in the European sense of the term, free, just, prosperous and secure." The scholarship is awarded annually to assist and encourage students who have demonstrated academic excellence to undertake an honours course at The University of Western Australia (the University) which explores issues surrounding government intervention versus increased individual opportunity and responsibility.

The scholarship is available to students from the following faculties:

Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences  

Law                             

Natural and Agricultural Sciences

UWA Business School

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Mannkal Foundation Honours Scholarship.

Value
2.
The value of the scholarship is $10,000.

Purpose 
3.
The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage students who demonstrate academic excellence in their undergraduate studies at the University, to pursue an honours course "to develop further interest and knowledge of institutions (i.e. practices and beliefs) and laws that underpin societies and their States that are liberal in the European sense of the term, free, just, prosperous and secure."

Eligibility Requirements

(1) To be eligible for consideration a student must—

(a) have demonstrated academic excellence in their undergraduate studies; and

(b) have been accepted to undertake an honours course in one or more of the relevant faculties offering the scholarship at the University.

Body Responsible for Selection
5.
The selection committee for the scholarship is the Scholarships Committee.

Selection Criteria
6.
The scholarship is awarded to an eligible student on the basis of academic achievement and the relevance of their proposed research stated in their application.

Selection Process
7.
Selection of the recipient is made by the Scholarships Committee having regard to the students' academic records and applications.

Awarding Body
8.
The scholarship is awarded by the Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the relevant faculty.

Method of Payment
9.
The scholarship is paid in fortnightly instalments.

Duration of Award
10.
The scholarship is tenable for up to two semesters which are normally consecutive.

Application Procedure
11. (1)
  Written applications are called for annually by the Graduate Research and Scholarships Office from students who have been accepted for enrolment in an honours course at the University in one of the following faculties: Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and the UWA Business School;

(2)  Applications must be submitted to the Graduate Research and Scholarships Office by the advertised closing date.

(3) Applications must include details of the student's research project and a short statement of no more than 500 words demonstrating how their chosen project aligns with the purpose of the scholarship.

Administering Body
12.
The scholarship is administered by the Scholarships Committee.

Publications
13.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Mannkal Foundation Honours Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
