Centenary Trust for Women Miles Family Scholarship *An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow. Karen (Miles) Field has donated $100,000 to establish a fund to provide the Centenary Trust for Women Miles Family Scholarship in the name of her family which has a long record of residence in rural Australia. The scholarship reflects both her concern for rural based families who incur considerable additional costs to educate their children and her continuing interest in encouraging young women into the sciences. The fund is established and the scholarship is administered in accordance with the following conditions. Title 1. The scholarship is called the Centenary Trust for Women Miles Family Scholarship. Purpose 2. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage and assist women from rural or remote Western Australia who are experiencing financial hardship, to continue their studies towards an undergraduate degree within the Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences. Value 3. The value of the scholarship is the annual income from the fund after capitalisation in accordance with Senate policy. Eligibility Requirements 4. (1) To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must— (a) be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia; (b) be from a rural or regional area of Western Australia (as defined under eligibility criteria for Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships, available at www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/home/undergrad/cmmnwlth_lrn_schols); (c) be enrolled or intend to enrol full-time, unless there are exceptional circumstances that preclude full-time enrolment;1 (d) have successfully completed the first 48 points of an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences; and (e) be able to demonstrate financial hardship and limited educational opportunities, for example because of distance, economic disadvantage, cultural differences, disability or responsibility for the care of children, the ill or the elderly. (2) Financial hardship may be demonstrated by the applicant— (a) being in receipt of a means-tested Commonwealth income support payment (such as Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance etc.); or (b) submitting a statement of financial hardship and its impact on educational opportunities. 1 Exceptional circumstances may include, but are not limited to, a medical condition or major family commitments. Body Responsible for Selection 5. The selection committee for the scholarship is the Scholarships Committee. Selection Criteria 6. The scholarship is awarded by the selection committee to the applicant who, in its opinion, best demonstrates— (a) academic achievement, as evidenced by their academic record; and (b) financial hardship; (c) educational disadvantage associated with distance, economic disadvantage, cultural differences, disability or chronic medical condition, or having carer responsibilities. Selection Process 7. Selection of the recipient is made by the selection committee having regard to the applicants’ academic records, completed application forms and supporting documentation, Awarding Body 8. The scholarship is awarded by the Scholarships Committee. Method of Payment 9. (1) The scholarship is paid in two equal instalments. (2) One instalment is normally paid on or following the census date in each semester. (3) Payment of the second instalment is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules of the course in relation to which the scholarship is awarded. Duration of Award 10. (1) The scholarship is tenable for two semesters which are normally consecutive. (2) Continuation of the scholarship is conditional upon the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules of the course for which the scholarship is awarded. Application Procedure 11. (1) Written applications are called for annually by the Scholarships Office and must be submitted by the advertised closing date. (2) Application forms are available from the Scholarships Office. Concurrent Awards 12. The scholarship may be held concurrently with another external award or University award provided that the conditions of the concurrent award so permit. Administering Body 13. The scholarship is administered by the Scholarships Office. Publications 14. Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Centenary Trust for Women Miles Family Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
