Centenary Trust for Women Margaret Mills (nee Summers) Memorial Scholarship * [F20820]An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow. This scholarship is established in support of the objectives of the UWA Centenary Trust for Women and in memory of the late Mrs Margaret Mills (nee Summers) who, as a clinical biochemist and endocrinologist in Western Australia, mentored many newcomers to the profession and was greatly respected and admired. The scholarship is provided to encourage and assist an undergraduate female student majoring in Biochemistry and is administered in accordance with the following conditions. Title 1. The scholarship is called the Centenary Trust for Women Margaret Mills (nee Summers) Memorial Scholarship. Purpose 2. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage and assist a meritorious female student who is experiencing financial hardship to continue her studies towards a major in Biochemistry. Value 3. The value of the scholarship is the annual income on the fund after capitalisation in accordance with Senate policy. Eligibility Requirements 4. (1) To be eligible for consideration for a scholarship an applicant must— (a) be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia; (b) be female; (c) have successfully completed at least 48 points towards an undergraduate degree and be enrolled full time in units leading to a major in Biochemistry1; and (d) be able to demonstrate financial hardship and that their educational opportunities are limited, for example because of distance, economic disadvantage, cultural differences, disability or responsibility for the care of children, the ill or the elderly. (2) Financial hardship may be demonstrated by the applicant— (a) being in receipt of a means tested Commonwealth income support payment (such as Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance etc.); or (b) submitting a statement of financial hardship and its impact on educational opportunities. This statement must be supported by a Statutory Declaration. 1 Unless there are exceptional circumstances which prevent full-time enrolment. Selection Criteria 5. The scholarship is awarded to the applicant who, in the opinion of the selection committee, best demonstrates through their application and supporting documentation— (a) academic achievement; (b) financial hardship; and (c) ways in which the scholarship would assist in addressing the limitations referred to in 4(2)(b). Body Responsible for Selection 6. The selection committee for the scholarship is the Undergraduate Scholarships Sub-Committee. Selection Process 7. Selection of the recipient is made by the selection committee having regard to the applicants’ academic records, completed application forms and supporting documentation. Application Procedure 8. (1) Applications are called for each year by the Scholarships Office, in conjunction with those for the Commonwealth Scholarships and UWA SWANS Scheme Scholarships. (2) Application forms are available from the Scholarships Office at the University. (3) Completed applications must be submitted to the Scholarships Office by the advertised closing date. Awarding Body 9. The scholarship is awarded by the Scholarships Committee, on the recommendation of the selection committee. Method of Payment 10. (1) The scholarship is paid in two instalments. (2) One instalment is normally paid on or following the census date in each of the relevant semesters. (3) Payment of the second instalment is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules for the course in relation to which the scholarship is awarded. Duration of Award 11. The scholarship is tenable for two semesters which are normally consecutive. Concurrent Award 12. The scholarship may be held concurrently with another external or University award provided that the conditions of the concurrent award so permit. Administering Body 13. The scholarship is administered by the Scholarships Office. Publications 14. Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the CTW Margaret Mills (nee Summers) Memorial Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
