Matthew Kasner Moss Scholarship * [F24369]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

Mrs Ada Nellie Moss has bequeathed a sum of money "to the Medical School at The University of Western Australia" (the University) to establish a fund to provide a scholarship in memory of her late husband Dr Matthew Kasner Moss.

The scholarship is available to an eligible Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree student who, among those accepted in the quota for the Outer Metropolitan Program (OMP), can demonstrate financial hardship and high academic achievement as evidenced by their Tertiary Entrance Ranking (TER). The scholarship is administered in accordance with the following conditions.

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Matthew Kasner Moss Scholarship.

Purpose
2.
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist and encourage an eligible OMP student who can demonstrate financial hardship and high academic achievement to undertake the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree course.

Value
3.
The value of the scholarship is $5000 per annum which is CPI indexed every five years.

Eligibility Requirements
4.(1)
To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must—

(a) have been accepted into the quota for the OMP;

(b) be eligible to enrol in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree course;

(c) be able to demonstrate financial hardship; and

(d) be able to demonstrate high academic achievement as evidenced by their TER.

(2) Financial hardship may be demonstrated by the applicant—

(a) being in receipt of a means tested Commonwealth income support payment (such as Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance etc.); or

(b) by submitting a statement of financial hardship.

Selection Criteria

The scholarship is awarded to the eligible applicant who, in the opinion of the selection committee, best demonstrates through their application and supporting documentation—

(a) financial hardship; and

(b) high academic achievement as evidenced by their TER.

Body Responsible for Selection
6.
The selection committee for the scholarship comprises—

(a) the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, or nominee;

(b) the Manager (Student Affairs) of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences; and

(c) the Manager (Admissions) of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

Selection Process

Selection of the recipient is made by the selection committee, having regard to the applicants’ completed application forms and supporting documentation as set out in 4.

Application Procedure
8.(1)
Written applications are called for annually by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, and must be submitted to the Manager (Student Affairs) of the Faculty by the advertised closing date.

(2) Applications must include supporting documentation as set out in 4.

Awarding Body
9.
The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Method of Payment
10.
The scholarship is paid in one instalment on or following the census date in first semester.

Criteria for Continuation
11.
Continuation of the scholarship is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules for the course and remaining enrolled in the course for which the scholarship is awarded.

Duration of Award
12.
Subject to 11, the scholarship is tenable for the duration of the course.

Concurrent Award
13.
The scholarship may be held in conjunction with another external or University award provided that the conditions of the concurrent award so permit.

Administering Body
14.
The scholarship is administered by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

Publications
15.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Matthew Kasner Moss Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
