Nakashima Foundation Honours Scholarship in Japanese Studies * [F16489]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

The Nobuyuki and Midori Nakashima Foundation (the Foundation) annually donates a sum of money to the University of Western Australia (the University) to provide a scholarship to encourage and assist students to undertake an honours course in Japanese Studies.  A fund is established for this purpose and the scholarship is administered in accordance with the following conditions.

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Nakashima Foundation Honours Scholarship in Japanese Studies.

Value
2.
The value of the scholarship is $2400.

Purpose
3.
The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage students to pursue an honours course in Japanese studies at the University.

Eligibility Requirements
4.
To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must—

(a) be accepted for enrolment in an honours course within the discipline of Asian Studies in the School of Social and Cultural Studies at the University of Western Australia; and

(b) obtain the endorsement of the Chair of the Asian Studies Discipline Group for their proposed honours project focussing on Japan.

Body Responsible for Selection
5.
The selection committee for the scholarship comprises:

(a) the Chair of the Asian Studies Discipline Group; and

(b) the Head of the School of Social and Cultural Studies.

Selection Criteria
6.
The scholarship is awarded by the School of Social and Cultural Studies on the recommendation of the selection committee to the applicant who, in its opinion, best demonstrates—

(a) academic achievement; and

(b) the significance of their proposed honours project to the study of Japan. 

Selection Process
7.
Selection of the recipient is made having regard to the applicants' academic records and completed written applications.

Awarding Body
8.
The scholarship is awarded by the School of Social and Cultural Studies in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Method of Payment
9.(1)
The scholarship is paid in two equal instalments.

(2) Each instalment is made on or following the census dates in first semester or second semester as relevant. 

Duration of Award
10.
The scholarship is tenable for two semesters, which are normally consecutive.

Application Procedure
11.(1)
Applications are called for in October each year.

(2) Application forms, available from the Asian Studies office, must be submitted to the Administrative Officer of Asian Studies by the advertised closing date.

(3) Completed application forms must be accompanied by—

(a) a written statement of no more than 500 words describing the significance of the honours project to the study of Japan; and

(b) in the case of applicants from a university other than The University of Western Australia, academic transcripts.

Administering Body
12.
The scholarship is administered by the School of Social and Cultural Studies in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Publications
13.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Nakashima Foundation Honours Scholarship in Japanese Studies must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.

Intellectual property is governed by the University's Intellectual Property policy available on the University's web site.
