Newmont (Asia Pacific) Indigenous Scholarship in Geology * [F25624]An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow. Newmont (Asia Pacific) donates funds annually to provide a scholarship to encourage and assist meritorious Indigenous students to study geology at The University of Western Australia (“the University”) within an undergraduate degree course with a programme or major in geology. Title 1. The scholarship is called the Newmont (Asia Pacific) Indigenous Scholarship in Geology. Purpose 2. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage and assist a meritorious Indigenous student who is enrolled in or intending to enrol in an undergraduate degree course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science (Earth Science), or Bachelor of Science (Mineral Geoscience), or Bachelor of Science (Geology and Resource Economics), or a Bachelor of Science with a major in geology, including an honours year where applicable. Availability 3. One scholarship is available each year. Value 4. The value of the scholarship is $10,000 per annum, comprising— (a) the up-front student contribution amount per annum applicable to the course for which the scholarship is awarded; and (b) the balance of funds remaining after payment of (a), to be used, at the student’s discretion, as a living allowance or for field trips or the purchase of books or to meet other expenses associated with study. Eligibility Requirements 5. To be eligible for consideration for a scholarship an applicant must be— (a) a citizen or permanent resident of Australia; (b) an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and (c) enrolled or intending to enrol full-time in a course leading to the Bachelor of Science (Earth Science), or Bachelor of Science (Mineral Geoscience) or Bachelor of Science (Geology and Resource Economics) or Bachelor of Science with a major in Geology. Selection Criteria 6. The scholarship is awarded to the applicant who, in the opinion of the selection committee, best demonstrates through their application and supporting documentation: (a) academic achievement; and (b) one or more of the following: (i) other achievements or abilities; (ii) leadership; (iii) community service. Body Responsible for Selection 7. The body responsible for selection is the Scholarships Committee. Selection Process 8. Selection of the recipient is made by the selection committee having regard to the applicants’ academic records, completed application forms and supporting documentation. Application Procedure 9. Written applications are called for annually on the University Scholarships website (http://www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/home/undergrad) and must be submitted with supporting documentation by the advertised closing date. Awarding Body 10. The scholarship is awarded by the Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the School of Indigenous Studies. Method of Payment 11. (1) The scholarship consists of two parts. (2) The up-front student contribution fees applicable to the course for which the scholarship is awarded are paid directly to the University, subject to (4), on or after the census date in each semester. (3) The balance of the scholarship is paid directly to the student in two equal instalments each year to be paid, subject to (4), on or following the census date in each of the relevant semesters. (4) Payment of the second instalment is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules for the course in relation to which the scholarship is awarded. Criteria for Continuation 12. Continuation of the scholarship from year to year is subject to the recipient— (a) making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules of the course for which the scholarship is awarded; and (b) maintaining continuous enrolment at the University as a full-time student in the course for which the scholarship is awarded unless otherwise approved by the Scholarships Committee or except as set out in Clause 15. Duration of Award 13. The scholarship is tenable for the duration of the undergraduate course for which it is awarded, including an honours year if applicable. Concurrent Award 14. The scholarship cannot be held concurrently with any other externally funded undergraduate scholarship except a Commonwealth Scholarship. Deferral of Scholarship 15. The scholarship may be deferred for up to one year (two semesters) during the tenure of the scholarship. Administering Body 16. The scholarship is administered by the Graduate Research and Scholarships Office. Student Opportunity 17. Newmont Mining will endeavour to provide an opportunity for recipients to— (a) undertake at least one period of paid work experience with the company during a vacation period; and (b) take part in the Newmont Career Mentor Program. Publications 18. Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Newmont (Asia Pacific) Indigenous Scholarship in Geology must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
