Ivan T. Oliver Vacation Scholarship in Biochemistry [F4719]Colleagues, past students and other friends of the late Professor Ivan T. Oliver having made donations to establish a fund in his memory for the purpose of providing a scholarship to be called the Ivan T. Oliver Vacation Scholarship in Biochemistry, the fund and the scholarship are established and are administered in accordance with the following regulations. 1. The income from the fund after capitalisation, in accordance with Senate policy, is available for the scholarship. 2. The scholarship is awarded by a committee comprising a nominee of the Head of the School of Biomedical and Chemical Sciences who must be a senior academic staff member in biochemistry and two academic staff members in biochemistry selected by the academic staff in biochemistry. 3. The purpose of the scholarship is to enable a student to carry out research in a laboratory approved by the committee for six to eight weeks during the long vacation following completion of BIOC2201 Biochemistry of the Cell and BIOC2202 Biochemical Regulation of Cell Function or a major in Biochemistry. 4. Unless there is no applicant of sufficient merit, the scholarship is awarded annually. 5. If an award is not made, the income for that year remains available to the committee for the following year so that it may award two scholarships in that year. 6. The scholarships are advertised annually with a closing date of 31 August. 7. The scholarship must not be held jointly with any other scholarship. 8. Within four weeks of completing their research, the holder of an award must submit to the Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences Executive Officer a report covering the work completed during tenure of the scholarship. 9. The scholarship is paid at intervals determined by the Head of the School of Biomedical and Chemical Sciences but 25 per cent of the scholarship is withheld pending confirmation that the report referred to in 8 is satisfactory. 10. Any thesis or other publication resulting from research during tenure of the scholarship must acknowledge the assistance of the scholarship. |
