Laing O'Rourke Engineering Scholarship * [F11250]An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow. Laing O'Rourke Pty Ltd provides a scholarship to assist a meritorious student to study Civil or Mechanical Engineering at The University of Western Australia (the University) and to provide the student with an opportunity to gain practical experience in either field through paid vacation placement with the company prior to completing their studies. The scholarship is administered in accordance with the following conditions. Title 1. The scholarship is called the Laing O'Rourke Engineering Scholarship. Purpose 2. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist and encourage full-time students enrolled at the University in the Civil or Mechanical Engineering programme in either the Bachelor of Engineering or a combined course including a Bachelor of Engineering component. Value 3. The annual value of the scholarship is $10,000. Eligibility Requirements 4. To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must— (a) be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia; (b) be enrolled in the Civil or Mechanical Engineering programme in either the Bachelor of Engineering or a combined course including a Bachelor of Engineering component; (c) be in a position to complete a minimum of 48 points towards the Bachelor of Engineering or the Bachelor of Engineering component of a combined course by the end of the year prior to the year in which the scholarship would commence; (d) be intending to enrol in units to a minimum value of 36 points in the year in which the scholarship would commence; and (e) not be in a position to complete the requirements of the Bachelor of Engineering before the end of the year in which the scholarship would commence. Body Responsible for Selection 5. The selection committee for the scholarship comprises— (a) the Dean of the Faculty or nominee (as Chair); (b) the Head of the School of Civil and Resource Engineering or nominee; (c) the Head of the School of Mechanical Engineering or nominee; and (d) the Regional Manager of Laing O'Rourke Pty Ltd or nominee. Selection Criteria 6. The scholarship is awarded to the applicant who best demonstrates— (a) academic achievement as evidenced by their academic record; and (b) leadership skills, communication and interpersonal skills. Selection Process 7.(1) Selection of the recipient is made by the selection committee having regard to the applicants' academic records, completed application forms, curriculum vitae and referee reports, where applicable. (2) The selection committee may interview short-listed applicants. Application Procedure 8.(1) The scholarship is advertised annually by the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics in time for an application to be submitted for the relevant year. (2) Applications must be in writing and submitted to the Faculty Office of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics by the advertised closing date. (3) Applications addressing the selection criteria must be made on the application form available from the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics, and be accompanied by— (a) a brief curriculum vitae including present and previous work experience where applicable; and (b) where applicable, the names and contact details of two work experience referees. Awarding Body 9. The scholarship is awarded by the Board of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics, on the recommendation of the selection committee. Method of Payment 10. (1) The scholarship is paid in instalments. (2) One instalment is normally paid on or following the census date in each of the relevant semesters. (3) Payment of the second and subsequent instalments is subject to the recipient satisfying the criteria for continuation of the scholarship set out in 12. Duration of Award 11. Subject to 12, the scholarship is tenable for up to three years or until the recipient has completed the course for the Bachelor of Engineering, whichever is the shorter period. Criteria for Continuation of Scholarship 12. (1) Continuation of the scholarship is subject to the recipient— (a) achieving at least a credit in each unit in the previous academic year; and (b) remaining enrolled in units to the value of at least 36 points in the course for which the scholarship is awarded. (2) If a student does not meet the criteria in (1) the selection committee will terminate the scholarship, unless, in its opinion, there are exceptional circumstances which prevented the student from meeting these criteria. Concurrent Awards 13. The scholarship must not be held concurrently with any other scholarship. Student Opportunity 14. Recipients of the scholarship are provided with the opportunity to— (a) participate in the Laing O'Rourke Pty Ltd company mentoring programme; (b) undertake one period, of a maximum of twelve weeks, of paid vacation work experience with the company in the summer vacation period; (c) receive mentoring from Laing O'Rourke Pty Ltd for their final year project; and (d) participate in ambassadorial roles offered by Laing O'Rourke Pty Ltd. Administering Body 15. The scholarship is administered by the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics. Publications 16. Any thesis, dissertation or other publications resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Laing O'Rourke Engineering Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line. Intellectual Property 17. (2) The Company agrees to execute any documents necessary and do all reasonable things required to give effect to this clause. |
