conditions that follow.
Introduction
The Pearman family have donated a sum of money to establish
the John and Rosemary Pearman Endowment Fund to provide a
scholarship within the Foundation Professors Bachelor of Medical
Science Scholarship Programme, in honour of Professor Neville
Stanley.
The Foundation Professors Bachelor of Medical Science Scholarship
Programme consists of up to eleven scholarships established to
honour the eleven Founding Professors of the Medical School, and
to augment research capacity through the Bachelor of Medical
Science honours degree. The purpose of the programme is to
encourage medical students to undertake scientific medical
research, to enable them to gain considerable insight into
research methods and to assess their personal suitability for
future medical research and a career in research and/or academia.
Recipients of the scholarships in the programme spend a year
studying an aspect of one of the eleven medical founding
disciplines or related disciplines. The scholarships are in
honour of the following Founding Professors:
- Cecil Kidd, Foundation Professor of Psychiatry
- Gordon King, Foundation Professor of Obstetrics and
Gynaecology
- Cecil Lewis, Foundation Professor of Surgery
- Mary Lockett, Foundation Professor of Pharmacology
- Joseph Lugg, Foundation Professor of Biochemistry
- William Macdonald, Foundation Professor of Child
Health
- Eric Saint, Foundation Professor of Medicine
- Rolf ten Seldam, Foundation Professor of Pathology
- Wilfred Simmonds, Foundation Professor of Physiology
- David Sinclair, Foundation Professor of Anatomy
- Neville Stanley, Foundation Professor of Microbiology
The scholarship is established and administered in accordance
with the following conditions.
Title
1. The scholarship is called the John and
Rosemary Pearman Bachelor of Medical Science Scholarship in
Honour of Professor Neville Stanley.
Purpose
2. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist and
enable eligible undergraduate medical students enrolled in the
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree courses to
undertake and gain experience in scientific medical research
through completion of a Bachelor of Medical Science honours
degree.
Value
3. The value of the scholarship is
$60001 provided from the annual income on the
fund after capitalisation in accordance with Senate policy.

Eligibility Requirements
4. (1) To be eligible to apply for a
scholarship an applicant must be—
(a) enrolled in the
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree courses at
The University of Western Australia; and
(b) eligible to enrol in
the Bachelor of Medical Science honours degree.
Body Responsible for Selection
5. The selection committee for the scholarships
comprises—
(a) the Dean of the Faculty
of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, or nominee;
(b) the Associate Dean
(Research), or nominee; and
(c) the Manager Student
Affairs, or nominee.
Selection Criteria
6. (1) The scholarship is awarded to
the applicant who, in the opinion of the selection committee,
best demonstrates through their application and supporting
documentation—
(a) academic achievement;
and
(b) a research proposal
relevant to the Bachelor of Medical Science honours degree course
and the discipline of Microbiology, including but not limited to
virology, infectious disease, control of infection, antibiotic
resistance, vaccines and the epidemiology of infectious
diseases.
(2) In the event that there is
no applicant proposing to undertake research in the discipline of
Microbiology, the selection committee may consider awarding the
scholarship to a Bachelor of Medical Science honours student
undertaking their research project in a related discipline.
Selection Process
7. Selection of the recipient is made by the selection
committee having regard to the applicants’ academic
records, completed application forms and supporting
documentation.
(2) The selection committee may
interview short-listed applicants.
Awarding Body
8. The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of
Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences on the recommendation of
the selection committee.
Method of Payment
9. (1) The scholarship is paid in two equal
instalments.
(2) One instalment is normally
paid on or following the census date in each of the relevant
semesters.
(3) Payment of the second
instalment is subject to the recipient making satisfactory
progress in accordance with the rules for the course in relation
to which the scholarship is awarded.
Criteria for Continuation
10. Continuation of the scholarship is subject to the
recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the
rules for the course and remaining enrolled in the course for
which the scholarship is awarded.
Duration of Award
11. Subject to clause 10, the scholarship is tenable for
two semesters which are normally consecutive.
Concurrent Awards
12. The scholarship may be held concurrently with
another external or University award provided that the conditions
of the concurrent award so permit.
Application Procedure
13. (1) Written applications are called
for annually by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health
Sciences, and must be submitted to the Manager (Student Affairs)
of the Faculty by the advertised closing date.
(2) Applications must
include:
(a) a 500–700 word research
proposal;
(b) an application form;
and
(c) the required supporting
documentation.
Administering Body
14. The scholarship is administered by the Faculty of
Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.
Publications
15. Any thesis, dissertation or other publications
resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in
receipt of the John and Rosemary Pearman Bachelor of Medical
Science Scholarship in Honour of Professor Neville Stanley must
acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the
University by-line.
