Jean Rogerson Honours Studentships in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences * [F5147]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

Miss Jean Ethel Rogerson MBE, BSc, ARACI, Warden of Convocation for two periods totalling eight years and a member of the University Senate for 30 years, died on 25 December 1993 and by her will left 30 per cent of the residue of her estate to the University as a capital fund with the income of it to be applied:

(a) as to one-third to be added in each year to the capital fund; and

(b) as to the remaining two-thirds to provide postgraduate fellowships and undergraduate studentships to be awarded on the basis of ability and not to be means tested.

In compliance with the regulations governing the Jean Rogerson Bequest Fund one-third of the available income of the bequest fund is available annually for Jean Rogerson Undergraduate Studentships and one-seventh of that one- third is available for studentships in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, to be administered in accordance with the following conditions.

1. A studentship may be held concurrently with another external or University award provided that the conditions of the concurrent award so permit.

2.(1) The number and value of the studentships awarded each year will depend on the income available.

(2) To allow the income to accrue sufficiently, studentships are not awarded in some years.

3. The studentships are awarded by the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, having regard to the recommendation of the Jean Rogerson Selection Committee in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, as described in 4, to the students achieving the best qualifying performance for entry to the honours programme of any bachelor's degree in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

4. The Jean Rogerson Selection Committee comprises:

(a) the Dean, as chair;

(b) the Academic Student Adviser; and

(c) three members of the Faculty Board, elected by the Faculty Board.

5. The Jean Rogerson Selection Committee does not apply any means test in the award of a studentship.

6. A studentship is paid at two intervals through the enrolment, continuation of the studentship from semester to semester being subject to the awardee making satisfactory progress in the previous semester.

7. Awards are conditional on enrolment in an honours programme of any bachelor's degree in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Note: For the purposes of these conditions, the term 'honours programme' means the programme of work prescribed for the honours year only.
