Jean Rogerson Undergraduate Studentships in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences * [F5151]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

Miss Jean Ethel Rogerson MBE, BSc, ARACI, Warden of Convocation for two periods totalling eight years and a member of the University Senate for 30 years, died on 25 December 1993 and by her will left 30 per cent of the residue of her estate to the University as a capital fund with the income of it to be applied:

(a) as to one-third to be added in each year to the capital fund; and

(b) as to the remaining two-thirds to provide postgraduate fellowships and undergraduate studentships to be awarded on the basis of ability and not to be means tested.

In compliance with the regulations governing the Jean Rogerson Bequest Fund one-third of the available income of the bequest fund is available annually for Jean Rogerson Undergraduate Studentships and one-seventh of that one-third is available for studentships in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, to be administered in accordance with the following conditions.

1.(1) The object of the studentships is to encourage medical and dental students to undertake an approved course of advanced study and research as candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Medical Science or Bachelor of Science in Dentistry in accordance with the regulations governing the respective degrees.

(2) Awards are conditional on enrolment in either of the courses referred to in (1).

2. A studentship may be held concurrently with another external or University award provided that the conditions of the concurrent award so permit.

3. The studentships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement and the merit of the proposed research programme.

4. The studentships are awarded by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences on the recommendation of the Faculty Higher Degrees Committee.

5. The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry does not apply any means test in the award of a studentship.

6. The number and value of studentships is determined by the Faculty from time to time, provided that the value of an award must be no less than $1000.

7.(1) The period of tenure is one year.

(2) Payment of a studentship is made at intervals determined by the Faculty, continuation from semester to semester being subject to the awardee making satisfactory progress in the previous semester.

8. The studentships are advertised in time for applications to be lodged at the Faculty Administrative Office by 31 October of the year preceding that in which the studentships are to be taken up.

9. Any thesis or publication resulting from research under a studentship must acknowledge the fact.
