P. F. Sobotka Undergraduate Scholarship * [F7764]
An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is
governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the
General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework
Students except as set out in the conditions that
follow.
The late Dr Paul F. Sobotka, having bequeathed the whole of
his residuary estate to The University of Western Australia to
establish a fund to provide undergraduate scholarships in the
School of Medicine, a fund is established for the purpose and the
scholarship is awarded in accordance with the following
conditions.
Title
1. The scholarship is called the P. F. Sobotka
Undergraduate Scholarship.
Purpose
2. The object of the P. F. Sobotka Undergraduate
Scholarship is to assist Level 5/6 Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor
of Surgery (MB BS) students of The University of Western
Australia to undertake approved studies overseas, principally in
China and Asian countries.
Number and Value
3. (1) The scholarship is provided from the annual
income of the fund after capitalisation, in accordance with
Senate policy.
(2) The number of scholarships
and the value of each is determined by the Faculty Higher Degrees
Committee.
Note: In each year 10 per cent
of the income for that year is capitalised and the balance of the
income is available for scholarships, provided that if in any
year no scholarship is awarded, or if the annual value of
scholarships awarded does not exhaust the available income, the
unexpended income or balance of income is carried forward and
added to and become part of the income for scholarships in
subsequent years.
Eligibility Requirements
4. (1) To be eligible to apply for a
scholarship an applicant must be—
(a) a citizen or permanent
resident of Australia; and
(b) enrolled in Level 5
units of the Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS)
degree course at the time of application.
(2) To take up the scholarship a student must
have successfully completed all Level 5 units and be enrolled in
Level 6 units at the time of award.
Body Responsible for Selection
5. The selection committee comprises the Scholarships
and Postdoctoral Fellowships Committee of the Faculty of
Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.
Selection Criteria
6. (1) The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of
Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences on the recommendation of
the selection committee to the applicant who, in its
opinion, best demonstrates—
(a) academic achievement;
and
(b) the purpose
of the proposed overseas studies.
(2) Applicants intending to undertake their
elective placement at Drum Tower Hospital in Nanjing, China, will
be considered favourably.
Selection Process
7. (1) Selection of the recipient is made by the
selection committee having regard to—
(a) the applicants'
academic records; and
(b) the applicants'
personal statements referred to in 12.
(2) The selection committee may
interview short-listed applicants.
(3) If in any year there is no applicant
of sufficient merit, a scholarship will not be awarded in that
year.
Awarding Body
8. The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty
of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences on the
recommendation of the selection committee.
Method of Payment
9. The scholarship is paid in one lump sum immediately
prior to the beginning of the elective.
Conditions of Award
10. The scholarship is conditional upon the recipient
remaining enrolled in the course for which the scholarship is
awarded.
Concurrent Awards
11. The scholarship may not be held concurrently with
any other scholarship or award. The recipient may not accept
another grant or paid appointment during the term of the
elective.
Application Procedure
12. (1) Written applications, including a one to two
page typed A4 personal statement by the applicant, including
relevant personal or professional experience and the purpose of
the elective at the destination they have selected, are called
for annually by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and
Health Sciences.
(2) Applications must be
submitted to the Manager (Student Affairs), by the advertised
closing date.
Administering Body
13. The scholarship is administered by the Faculty of
Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.
Publications
14. Any thesis, dissertation or other publication
resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in
receipt of the P. F. Sobotka Undergraduate Scholarship must
acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the
University by-line.
