Hedi Szasz Scholarship * [F24343]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

The Hedi Szasz Scholarship Fund provides scholarships each year to encourage and assist students to continue or complete a single degree course leading to the Bachelor of Arts pass degree from The University of Western Australia (the University). The scholarships are administered in accordance with the following conditions.

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Hedi Szasz Scholarship.

Purpose 
2.
The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage and assist students to continue or complete the single degree course for a Bachelor of Arts pass degree taken as a single degree at the University.

Type of scholarship 
3.
(1) There are two types of scholarships available—

(a) partial fee waiver scholarship; or

(b) cash payment scholarship.

(2) Students nominate at the time of submitting their application the type of scholarship for which they are applying.

Value
4.
The value of the scholarship is equivalent to the value of the UWA SWANS Scholarship in the year of award.1

1 In 2009 this value was $2207 which is indexed each year.

Eligibility Requirements

(1) To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must—

(a) be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia;

(b) have enrolled in and satisfactorily completed units to the value of at least 48 points of the single degree course leading to a Bachelor of Arts pass degree;

(c) be able to demonstrate financial hardship and that their educational opportunities are limited; and

(d) be enrolled or intending to enrol on a full–time basis, unless there are exceptional circumstances that preclude full-time enrolment.1

1 Exceptional circumstances may include, but are not limited to, a medical condition or major family commitments.

(2) Applicants must not have completed the requirements of a course of study regarded by the University as equivalent to or higher than an Australian bachelor’s award.

(3) Financial hardship may be demonstrated by the applicant—

(a) being in receipt of a means-tested Commonwealth income support payment (such as Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance etc.); or

(b) submitting a statement of financial hardship.

(4) Educational opportunities may be shown to be limited, for example, because of distance, economic disadvantage, cultural differences, disability, or responsibility for the care of children, the ill or the elderly.

Body Responsible for Selection
6.
The selection committee is the Undergraduate Scholarships Sub-Committee.

Selection Criteria
7.
The scholarship is awarded by the selection committee to the applicant who, in its opinion, best demonstrates through their completed application and supporting documentation—

(a) academic achievement;

(b) financial hardship;

(c) that their educational opportunities are limited; and

(d) how the scholarship would assist in addressing the limitations referred to in (c).

Awarding Body
8.
The scholarship is awarded by the Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Method of Payment
9. (1)
 The scholarship is paid in two equal instalments.

(2) One instalment is normally paid on or following the census date in each of the relevant semesters.

(3) Payment of the second instalment is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules of the course in relation to which the scholarship is awarded.

Duration of Award
10.
The scholarship is tenable for two semesters which are normally consecutive.

Concurrent Awards
11.
The scholarship may be held concurrently with another external or University award provided that the conditions of the concurrent award so permit.

Application Procedure
12.
(1) Applications are called for in conjunction with those for the UWA SWANS Scholarships.

(2) Application forms are available from the Scholarships Office at the University.

(3) Completed applications must be submitted to the Scholarships Office by the advertised closing date.

Administering Body
13.
The scholarship is administered by the Scholarships Office.

Publications 
14.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the Hedi Szasz Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
