Centenary Trust for Women Marita Trezise Memorial Scholarship * [F16486]

An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow.

The Trezise family donate a sum of money annually to provide the Centenary Trust for Women Marita Trezise Memorial Scholarship to assist and encourage a meritorious female student experiencing financial hardship and for whom educational opportunities are limited, for example because of distance, economic disadvantage, cultural differences, disability, or responsibility for the care of children, the ill or the elderly, to continue her course for the Bachelor of Economics pass degree at The University of Western Australia (the University). The scholarship is administered in accordance with the following conditions.

Title
1.
The scholarship is called the Centenary Trust for Women Marita Trezise Memorial Scholarship.

Purpose
2.
The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage and assist a meritorious female student enrolled in a course leading to the Bachelor of Economics pass degree at the University who is experiencing financial hardship associated with factors influencing educational disadvantage to pursue further studies towards completion of that course.

Type of Scholarship
3.
There are two types of scholarships available:

(a) partial fee waiver scholarship;

(b) cash payment scholarship.

(2) Students nominate at the time of submitting their application the type of scholarship for which they are applying.

Value
4.
The value of the scholarship is $2500.

Eligibility Requirements
5.(1)
To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must be—

(a) a citizen or permanent resident of Australia;

(b) female;

(c) enrolled in, and have successfully completed a minimum of 96 points towards a course leading to the Bachelor of Economics pass degree at the University; and

(d) able to demonstrate financial hardship and that their educational opportunities are limited.

(2) Applicants must not have completed the requirements of a course of study regarded by the University as equivalent to or higher than an Australian bachelor's award.

(3) Financial hardship may be demonstrated by the applicant—

(a) being in receipt of a means-tested Commonwealth income support payment (such as Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance etc.); or

(b) submitting a statement of financial hardship.

(4) Educational opportunities may be shown to be limited, for example, because of distance, economic disadvantage, cultural differences, disability, or responsibility for the care of children, the ill or the elderly.

(5) To be eligible to take up the scholarship students must enrol on a full-time basis unless there are exceptional circumstances that prevent full-time study.

Body Responsible for Selection
6.
The selection committee is the Undergraduate Scholarships Sub-Committee.

Selection Criteria and Process
7.
The scholarship is awarded by the Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the selection committee to the applicant who, in its opinion, best demonstrates through their academic record and completed application form:

(a) academic achievement; and

(b) financial hardship;

(c) that their educational opportunities are limited; and

(d) how the scholarship would assist in addressing the limitations referred to in (c).

Awarding Body
8.
The scholarship is awarded by the Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Method of Payment
9.(1)
The scholarship is paid in two equal instalments.

(2) One instalment is normally paid on or following the census date in each of first and second semesters.

(3) Payment of the second instalment is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules of the course in relation to which the scholarship is awarded.

Duration of Award 
10.
The scholarship is tenable for two semesters which are normally sequential.

Concurrent Awards
11.
The scholarship may be held concurrently with another award if permitted by the conditions of the other award.

Application Procedure
12.(1)
Applications are called for in October each year in conjunction with those for the Commonwealth Learning Scholarships. 

(2) Application forms are available from the Scholarships Office at the University.

(3) Completed applications must be submitted to the Scholarships Office by the advertised closing date.

Administering Body 
13.
The scholarship is administered by the Scholarships Office.

Publications
14.
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the CTW Marita Trezise Memorial Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line.
