Tunley Music Scholarships * [F13005]An asterisk (*) indicates that this scholarship is governed by conditions. This scholarship is governed by the General Conditions for Scholarships for Coursework Students except as set out in the conditions that follow. Note: This scholarship is not currently available. The purpose of the Tunley Music scholarships is to encourage students to pursue an undergraduate degree course in the School of Music at The University of Western Australia. The scholarships are governed by the following conditions. Availability 1. Four undergraduate scholarships are available as follows: (a) one in music education, called the Tunley Music Education Scholarship; (b) one in composition, called the Tunley Music Scholarship in Composition; (c) two in performance, each called the Tunley Music Scholarship in Performance. Value 2. The annual value of a scholarship is $10,000 which can be used at the recipient's discretion to contribute to payment of their music course fees and for education related purposes such as books, instrument repairs and maintenance. Eligibility Requirements 3. To be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must, at the time of application: (a) be a citizen or permanent residents of Australia; (b) be intending to commence tertiary studies for the first time; (c)(i) have applied through TISC for a place at the University, nominating one of the courses set out in (ii) as their first preference in the first round of offers; and (ii) be intending to enrol in the first 48 points of the following single degree courses offered by the University or in any combined course which includes one of the following components: Bachelor of Music (major in Composition or Performance);1 Bachelor of Music Education; or Bachelor of Musical Arts.
1 This does not preclude students majoring in Musicology (Honours). Body Responsible for Selection 4. The scholarships are awarded by a Selection Panel, whose membership comprises: (a) the Head of the School of Music or nominee, as Chair; (b) a senior academic member of staff in music education; (c) a senior academic member of staff in composition; and (d) a senior academic member of staff in performance. Selection Criteria 5.(1) The music Education and Performance Scholarships2 are awarded on the basis of: (a) academic merit; (b) audition; and (c) demonstration of music excellence to applicants who have been offered a full-time place in a course as set out in clause 3(c). (2) The Composition Scholarship is awarded on the basis of: (a) academic merit; (b) presentation of folio of compositions; and (c) demonstration of music excellence to applicants who have been offered a full-time place in a course as set out in clause 3(c). 2 Instrumental areas for these scholarships may be specified and advertised accordingly. Method of Payment 6. Each scholarship is paid in two instalments per year subject to clause 8. Duration 7. The scholarship is tenable for the duration of the undergraduate course for which it is awarded, including an Honours year if applicable, subject to the recipient meeting the conditions in clause 8. Criteria for Continuation of the Scholarship 8. Continuation of the scholarship from year to year is subject be to the recipient: (a) passing all units and achieving a weighted average mark of 65 per cent in the previous academic year; (b) maintaining continuous enrolment at the University as a full-time student, unless otherwise approved by the Head of the School of Music; (c) meeting with members of the Callaway Foundation on occasions as determined by the School of Music (up to 2 occasions); (d) participating in concerts or public presentations as determined by the School of Music (1 per year); (e) providing an annual written report to the Head of the School of Music on the use of the scholarship funds and on activities referred to in (c) and (d). Administering Body 9. The scholarships are administered by the School of Music. Concurrent Awards 10. A recipient of a Tunley Music Scholarship is not permitted to hold it concurrently with any other undergraduate scholarship.3 3 Excludes Residential Scholarships offered by any of the Residential Colleges affiliated with The University of Western Australia. Application Procedure 11.(1) The scholarships are advertised by the Prospective Students Office in July/August under the UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarships and Awards Programme. (2) The closing date for applications is in October of the year prior to the award. (3) Written applications must be submitted to the School of Music by the advertised closing date. Publications 12. Any publication, performance or dissertation resulting from the scholarship must acknowledge the assistance of the scholarship and must use the University by-line. Intellectual Property 13.
