Ad Hoc Honours Scholarships—Regulations |
-
PreambleFor some years the Scholarships Committee has, on behalf of various internal and external agencies, administered numbers of ad hoc postgraduate scholarships. There are now increasing numbers of ad hoc scholarships available for students in their honours years, but it is appropriate that these be administered directly by the schools or faculties concerned, rather than the Scholarships Committee. The Scholarships Committee has clearly indicated that there must be a distinction between scholarships awarded for educational purposes and the employment of students on commercial research projects, and the regulations covering these ad hoc honours scholarships have been drawn up on that basis. In particular, all scholarships must be awarded after open advertisement and according to academic merit, with due adherence to the equity principles espoused by the University. |
-
RegulationsAd Hoc Honours ScholarshipsExcept where covered by specific University regulations. 1. Scholarships are awarded for educational purposes only, and must not be tied to a specific research project unless otherwise authorised by the Scholarships Committee. 2. Scholarships are offered on the authority of the dean(s) concerned, and the dean(s) may delegate to head(s) of school(s) the authority to allocate the scholarships. 3. Scholarships are normally available to full-time students enrolled in the final year of an honours course, but may in special circumstances be offered to other honours students. 4. Students accepting a scholarship are not required to enter into any bond either during the course of or at the conclusion of their studies. 5. The faculty or school awarding a scholarship must publicly and appropriately advertise the award, and the award will be made on academic merit after receiving advice from a representative selection panel. 6. In respect of the awarding of scholarships, the dean(s) concerned must take due care that the University's equity policies are observed and that legal proprieties, especially concerning taxation matters, are observed. |
